Dr. Amy Lang, a professor in the department of aerospace engineering and mechanics, published an article in the October 2024 issue of Physics of Fluids. The article, titled “Sub-laminar surface drag due to the 'roller-bearing effect' over butterfly scale inspired grooves,” investigates the fluid dynamic function of scales from Monarch butterflies to reduce friction drag below that experienced in a laminar boundary layer. Our students thrive under pressure! 😉👷🏽♀️ A team of students advised by Dr. Sriram Aaleti, associate professor in the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering, competed in the national Big Beam Competition recently, taking home third place! Two UA teams each designed a 20-foot precast, prestressed concrete beam, then tested how much pressure it would take to break it, applying more than 41,000 lbs. Congratulations to the winning team members: Tu Luong, Chas Sanford, Bobby Bryant, Austin Castleberry, Xi Chen and Bryce Payne, E.I.!
