Bullying is not just an act of aggression or simple “teasing.” It is a destructive cycle that can leave long lasting scars on mental health, self esteem, and overall well being. Our 2024 National Survey revealed “Nearly half (49%) of LGBTQ+ young people ages 13-17 experienced bullying in the past year, and those who did reported significantly higher rates attempting suicide in the past year than those who did not experience bullying.” Nearly half. This is a staggering reminder that bullying, of any degree, has detrimental consequences. October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and we invite you to learn more about bullying and how to prevent it. 📢Be an Ally: Be a support to folks that are being targeted by bullying by showing kindness and respect. Being a beacon of support and safety for them can make all the difference. 📢Be aware: Bullying doesn't always occur in the classroom. Sometimes young people experience bullying online or in other social settings. Being aware of where and how bullying can happen is an important step in preventing it. 📢Create safe spaces: Fostering an environment that is safe and welcoming for LGBTQ+ young people to safely express themselves is crucial to someone that may be experiencing bullying. Having a safe space, both emotionally and physically, to turn to lowers the feeling of isolation that bullying may cause. 📢Speak up: If you see, or even suspect bullying - don't stay silent. Use your voice to advocate for not only the person being bullied but getting possible support for the bully. Oftentimes, bullies are reflecting struggles they may be facing in their own life. Facing bullying at the source may prevent it from continuing. Most importantly, be a kind human. #BullyingPreventionMonth #TheTrevorProject

LGBTQ+ history is human history 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ From the Stonewall Rebellion to freedom to marry; from Bayard Rustin to Marsha P. Johnson; from the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights of 1979 to the Equality March on Washington of 2016. 📢 For those LGBTQ+ organizers who spent years advocating in the halls of Congress to those angel allies who blocked protesters outside of the funeral of Matthew Shephard. Our collective history is ingrained in our movement and our memory. As we continue our mission to prevent suicide amongst LGBTQ+ young people, we honor those heroes of queer, trans, and intersex history whose visibility and vulnerability mixed with courage of conviction led to social, political, and cultural change. This LGBTQ+ History Month, we carry our history into the future as those who fought for equity, justice, and equality watch it come to fruition through our eyes. 🧡 #LGBTQHistoryMonth #LGBTQHistory #LGBTQ #TheTrevorProject

Classrooms should be a supportive environment 📚✏️ At The Trevor Project, we know that legal protections such as Title IX are only the beginning steps towards creating an inclusive world within schools and beyond. Our 2024 National Survey found that school policies play a significant role in LGBTQ+ young people’s mental health, with the presence of even one anti-LGBTQ+ policy being associated with higher rates of anxiety, depression, and past-year suicide attempts for young LGBTQ+ students. To ensure every LGBTQ+ young person can bring their authentic self to school every day, it’s essential that school administrators and staff review their protocols and procedures to determine how they can best support students in their district. Information on Title IX and more about what we are doing here at The Trevor Project to support LGBTQ+ young people can be found here on our new blog: https://lnkd.in/gNxSbNW2 #TitleIX #TheTrevorproject #InclusiveSchools #LGBTQ

This National Suicide Prevention Month, The Trevor Project is incredibly proud to commemorate two years of being the leading provider of LGBTQ Youth Specialized Services in the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. In our latest blog post, hear from Saurav Thapa (he/him), Senior Federal Affairs Manager, about why 988 LGBTQ youth specialized services are more important than ever. In 2023 alone, Trevor served over 278,000 contacts through 988, and we are on track to significantly exceed that number this year. That’s why funding and support for 988 LGBTQ youth services is more important than ever. Learn more about the history and future of 988 LGBTQ youth specialized services in our full blog from Saurav ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/g8HRXDVW #988Lifeline #SuicidePrevention #SuicidePreventionMonth #LGBTQ #TheTrevorProject

Our latest research sheds light on what we are all collectively experiencing and know to be true. Nationwide, more trans and nonbinary teens have attempted suicide after anti-trans laws were passed in their states. Using data spanning 2018-2022 and surveying over 61,000 trans and nonbinary young people, our study found that when states enacted anti-trans laws — from harmful bathroom bills to gender-affirming care bans — suicide attempts amongst trans and nonbinary young people age 13-17 increased from 7% to 72%. This number is staggering. Yet, in the context of the landscape around anti-LGBTQ+ policies and cultural acceptance, we know that transphobic legislation and TGNB+ mental health are interlinked. Our data backs that collective knowing. That’s why legal protections for queer and trans youth are necessary to increasing belonging and lowering the escalating rate of suicide attempts amongst trans teens. These protections are critical and lifesaving. Dr. Ronita Nath, Vice President of Research at The Trevor Project, said in an interview to TIME, “I would just urge all lawmakers to stop risking the health and safety of young people in hopes of scoring political points”. #ProtectTransKids #LGBTQ #StateLegislation #BreakingNews #DataMakesADifference #TheTrevorProject

Laws save lives. That’s why our research into the impact of anti-trans laws across the country reveals what we already know to be true: the recent wave of anti-transgender laws nationwide is risking the lives and livelihoods of LGBTQ+ young people. According to our latest research, anti-trans laws caused up to a 72% increase in suicide attempts amongst trans and nonbinary youth. “It is without question that anti-transgender policies, and the dangerous rhetoric surrounding them, take a measurable toll on the health and safety of transgender and nonbinary young people all across the country.” - CEO Jaymes Black (they/she/he) Read the full study, published in the Nature Human Behaviour journal ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/g9Csp4nk #TheTrevorProject #MentalHealth #LGBTQ #Research #Legislation #DataMakesADifference

Sports are for everyone, and young LGBTQ+ athletes should get to play the sport they love as their authentic selves. 🏆 That's why we're partnering with PUMA Group to #REFORMTheLockerRoom, a free online training for coaches, athletic directors, and supportive adults to help young LGBTQ+ athletes in crisis, support equity in sports, promote gender inclusivity, and use respectful language. 📢 When we empower and educate supportive adults on and off the field we build a safer and more inclusive world for LGBTQ+ young people. 🧡 It’s time to get in the game—together. When we all vote, we advocate for ourselves, our chosen families, and our communities. This election season, we want to remind you of the stakes of voting in support of LGBTQ+ young people. Data from our 2024 U.S. National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ+ Young People revealed that 90% of LGBTQ+ young people said that their well-being was negatively impacted by recent politics. Over half said that their well-being was impacted by politics a lot. Your commitment to voting in the 2024 election is a crucial way to support and affirm queer and trans youth. You can check your voter registration status, timelines for mail-in voting, and find your polling location at vote.org 🌈 LGBTQ+ voters may face additional barriers to voter registration, including voter ID requirements and gender-specific challenges, so be sure to prepare in advance of November 5. Make your plan to vote and sign our voter commitment pledge ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/gTm-draY #Election2024 #Vote #YourVoteCounts #LGBTQ #TheTrevorProject

Hear from Walter Panzirer, Trustee for the The Helmsley Charitable Trust, about why Helmsley and Trevor are working together to launch a $5 million public awareness campaign to reach LGBTQ+ young people across the Midwest. After watching an in-flight video about The Trevor Project on a recent trip, Walter realized that The Helmsley Charitable Trust needed to do something to address bullying and suicide amongst LGBTQ+ youth. Together, we know that our campaign will connect young people to valuable resources and save countless lives. Thank you to The Helmsley Charitable Trust for your invaluable contribution towards LGBTQ+ futures 🌈

It is essential to consider intersectionality when grantmaking. Since 2008, the goal of our Rural Healthcare Program has been to ensure that every person has access to high quality healthcare, regardless of their zip code. Rural communities were not receiving the same level of support as their urban counterparts, despite having unique difficulties in accessing healthcare. Recent research on LGBTQ+ grantmaking has revealed a similar disparity between the amount of financial support received to percentage of the population. Just as we set out to help close the gap for rural grantmaking 16 years ago, we want to help close the gap in support for LGBTQ+ folks today. Through a recent grant to The Trevor Project, we hope to support people who sit at the intersection of these two underrepresented groups in philanthropy — rural Americans and LGBTQ+ youth. Intersectionality must be a part of grantmaking, and we hope other philanthropies will join us as we work to end LGBTQ+ youth suicide. Helmsley Trustee Walter Panzirer recently wrote an op-ed for the Las Vegas Sun about our decision to partner with The Trevor Project and the importance of intersectional grantmaking: https://bit.ly/3XOQgNb #SuicidePreventionAwarenessMonth

As Bi+ Awareness Week comes to a close, we want to remind you to uplift bi+ voices 📢 One of our very own Crisis Services Digital Supervisors, Gabriella Potter (they/them) shares their insights of being bi+ and their lived experiences within the LGBTQ+ community. Oftentimes, bi+ folks experience erasure within the queer community. This is why advocating and educating is so important. 💜💗 Gabriella states they “hear from young bi+ people everyday about the challenges and fears they face because of the stigma around bisexuality.” 📢 In a world that often invalidates, erases, and harms people for multi-gender attraction, Bi+ Awareness Week highlights the need for resources that educate and advocate for a safer, more inclusive world for bi+ people. Read more about the importance of Bi+ Awareness Week & find more resources about how to support bi+ young people here: https://lnkd.in/gB2j7AWs #TheTrevorProject #BiAwarenessWeek #BisexualPride #LGBTQ
