Civic and Social Organizations

We develop teammates, inspire leaders, and empower citizens by integrating civic engagement into college athletics.

About us

The Team is a nonpartisan organization that creates award-winning programming focused on integrating civic engagement into college athletics. We offer a pathway for every athlete, coach, and administrator to become more engaged citizens. Before there was The Team, there was All Vote No Play. All Vote No Play started as a call to action. In June, 2020, Coach Eric Reveno, then Associate Head Coach for Georgia Tech Men's Basketball, tweeted that Election Day should be a day OFF from playing, and a day ON for voting. The tweet quickly went viral and inspired over 1,100 coaches to sign a pledge to do the same. All Vote No Play worked with the NCAA and student athlete leaders across the country to unanimously pass a legislation to make Election Day a dedicated day for civic engagement annually. In that moment, a new civic movement was born! Since, All Vote No Play has become a program that operates under its parent nonprofit organization, The Team.

Not too often do you get to bowl at the White House or chat with a Senator, but maybe even more rare is the opportunity to meet and learn from peers who are striving to change the world. This year, I was one of 25 student-athletes chosen from across the nation to be a part of the 2023-2024 Engaged Athlete Fellowship with The Team, which empowers a diverse class of motivated student-athletes to strengthen nonpartisan civic participation on their teams, their campuses, and their broader communities. Through this program, I developed and executed a year-long project linking civic engagement with athletics. The fellowship culminated last week at the Engaged Athlete Forum, held at the Microsoft Innovation and Policy Center in Washington, DC, which provided us with the opportunity to present our projects to leaders from business, sports, and political advocacy sectors, and to gain valuable insights from their experiences through panel discussions. Thank you to the people behind the vision of this fellowship. Joe Kennedy, Elizabeth Ford, and Hannah Nusbaum, you have truly created a program that will continue to guide student-athletes that want to enforce meaningful change in their communities. It was such an honor to be a part of this first cohort. This year, I was one of 25 student-athletes chosen from across the country to be a part of the 2023-2024 Engaged Athlete Fellowship with The Team, which empowers a diverse class of motivated student-athletes to strengthen nonpartisan civic participation on their teams, their campuses, and their broader communities. Through this program, I developed and executed a year-long project linking civic engagement with athletics through an initiative I called The Commodores Care Challenge. The Commodores Care Challenge was a year-long competition among Vanderbilt student-athletes to see which team could contribute the most hours towards community service. Born from the idea that athletes thrive on competition, the challenge aimed to incentivize more students to get involved in their community. By tapping into the competitive spirit of student-athletes, the challenge highlighted the profound impact that service can have in making a difference in the lives of others. This year, Vanderbilt student-athletes contributed over 1,500 hours, more than 3x the amount they did the prior year. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to participate in this fellowship program during my last year of college athletics. A special thank you to Joe Kennedy, Hannah Nusbaum and Elizabeth Ford for all of their help throughout the year and for their hard work to make this program a reality! Student Athlete at Harvard University

This year,  I was one of 25 student-athletes chosen from across the nation to be a part of the 2023-2024 Engaged Athlete Fellowship with The Team, which empowers a diverse class of motivated student athletes to strengthen nonpartisan civic participation on their teams, their campuses, and their broader communities. Through this program, I developed and executed a year-long project linking civic engagement with athletics. I helped the wonderful Lily O'Donoghue-McDonald and Harvard Votes Challenge with some tabling events to get students and athletes registered to vote and also illuminated the possibilities of careers in the public sector for Harvard student-athletes. The fellowship culminated last week at the Engaged Athlete Forum, held at the Microsoft Innovation Center and Policy Center in Washington, DC, which provided us with the opportunity to present our projects to leaders from business, sports, and political advocacy sectors, and to gain valuable insights from their experiences through panel discussions. My biggest inspiration from the week was seeing all of the amazing student-athletes from across the country passionate about the work and making connections that will last a lifetime. Thanks again to Joe Kennedy Elizabeth Ford and Hannah Nusbaum for making this possible and of course Spencer Baird for being an awesome roommate. It was an honor to speak at The Engaged Athlete Forum put on by The Team at the Microsoft Innovation offices in downtown D.C.! Joe Kennedy and his team are building something great! The Team is a non profit that creates award winning nonpartisan programs for student athletes. I was reminded of my life changing experience as a Drake University bulldog women’s soccer ⚽️ player and was able to share some of how I took everything I learned and applied it to corporate america with a group of 100+ student athletes. #studentathletes Check out https://www.theteam.org/

Thank you to all the staff, fellows, sponsors and partners that made the Inaugural Engaged Athlete Forum a reality. Our mutli-day trip to DC was educational, inspirational, and fun! At The Team… Our work is driven by the power of college athletics to effect positive change. With my own experiences rooted in sports and public engagement, I've witnessed firsthand the incredible potential of athletes, coaches, and administrators to advance civics and to be catalysts for good. The Team’s mission is clear: to integrate nonpartisan civic engagement and voter participation into the fabric of college athletics. Why? Because we believe that every individual within this community has the capacity to be more than just a player or a coach or a fan. They can be leaders, influencers, and engaged citizens who shape the future of our society.
