Last week, staff were present at Ars Nova Workshop (ANW) to honor jazz musician and educator Lovett Hines. ANW honored Hines with its 2024 Nova Award, and Philadelphia's Cultural Officer Val Gay presented Lovett with a citation of honor from State Senator Vincent Hughes' office. As we wrapped up a social media series on general operating support grantees last month, we're pleased to start one for the month of November on Presser Scholars, our Undergraduate Scholar Award recipients! A Presser Scholar is a music major at a select school who receives the honor at the end of their final year of study. These students represent colleges, universities, and conservatories across the country and have achieved a high level of musical and academic excellence, demonstrated leadership and service, and contributed to an inclusive community. First up in our series is Jahnvi Madan of New England Conservatory of Music. A Jazz Performance major, Jahnvi has earned many awards, advocated for establishing the Cultural Equity and Belonging Office at NEC, and has sought to create a true space of belonging that brings an audience together through her music. With the Award funds, she will be using this award to record her debut Jazz album of original music. At New Jersey City University, Jasmine De Leon stood out as a jazz performance major. She participated in the NJCU Afro Peruvian Loop tour to Peru to gain exposures to Afro Peruvian Jazz, toured as a percussionist with Urban Bush Women, and served as the assistant to Professor Theddy “Huevito” Lobaton. NEW GRANT ANNOUNCEMENT We are pleased to announce a new round of Special Project grants totaling $332,750 in single year and multi-year grants to 22 music organizations and collaborations in the Greater Philadelphia Area! Previous commitments of $43,000 will also be paid this year. This significant investment underscores the Foundation’s commitment to fostering creativity, collaboration, and inclusivity in the Greater Philadelphia music scene. This year’s grants, spanning three strategic categories of pilot programs, first-time collaborations, and general operating support for newer music organizations, aims to catalyze transformative musical initiatives. Congratulations to the The Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts on a $2 million grant from William Penn Foundation toward their $4.5 million building renovation. The renovation will create new program rooms and spaces, rearrange existing ones, improve interior circulation, and introduce new lighting, colors, materials, and finishes. The building's exterior and signage will also transform significantly to better reflect its cultural mission. The Foundation was proud to give an initial Capital Support grant toward the renovation project. Our final #FridaySpotlightSeries post on an Advancement of Music grantee is here! Our last post again spotlights an organization involved with organs, specifically an organ festival. Founded in 2021, Artcinia seeks to bring community-driven, engaging, affordable performances to neighborhood spaces throughout Philadelphia and beyond, making the arts accessible to all. This past year, they partnered with other organizations, including grantees The Philadelphia Orchestra, Opera Philadelphia, Marian Anderson Museum And Historical Society, and The Crossing, during the Philadelphia Organ Festival. The Festival featured organ music across the city and representing many different themes and genres. With its deep neighborhood efforts, Artcinia provides a launching point for connection and engagement and the Festival is just one example of that.
