60% of Americans worry that journalists and reporters are trying to mislead people by saying things they know are false or untrue, per the Edelman Trust Barometer. Yet most also believe it's possible to improve public confidence in the media. Calvin University journalism professor Jesse Holcomb explains the acceleration of political polarization, the rise of new social media platforms, and how the economic disruption of the news industry has fueled public mistrust in media. Yet there are steps media outlets can take to rebuild trust. Suggestions include practicing transparency, covering topics communities care about, striving for accurate reporting, and acknowledging mistakes. The deep sea is home to mysterious creatures, but seabed mining could turn it into a ghost town. As countries push to mine the ocean floor for minerals, fragile ecosystems and species that have taken millennia to evolve are at risk of irreversible damage. This Halloween, the scariest thing isn't fiction—it's the real threat of seabed mining. Without research and regulations, we can’t safeguard the species and ecosystems that make the deep-sea a vital part of our planet’s health. What does it take to rebuild trust? "Nothing will restore trust more than if the public can see the government be more responsive to their needs and provide results," writes Pew's Kil Huh. In our latest Trend magazine, Huh shares how states have taken effective, actionable steps to rebuild public confidence, such as: ➡️ Proactive planning ➡️ Addressing outdated policies ➡️ Embracing new technologies https://pew.org/4hdVMAE

Extreme weather hits county governments hard, with over 25% experiencing major disasters in 2023 alone. In response, National Association of Counties and Pew held resilience roundtables with county leaders, focusing on ways to reduce long-term disaster risks. These discussions highlighted three priorities: streamlining access to federal funds, addressing economic stressors, and promoting resilient land-use planning. https://pew.org/4e613Yl #Resilience #Flooding #Disasters

In our second series of Philadelphia neighborhoods, we’re taking a deeper look at immigrant growth. Immigration has contributed to population growth in classrooms, playgrounds, and the local economy. Two neighborhoods in particular have seen significant growth. • Paschall-Elmwood: This longstanding immigrant community has seen an increase of up to 125% between 2017 and 2022. • Mayfair: Over the last decade, the immigrant population has grown by 136.8%. In both neighborhoods, immigrants make up a quarter of the population. Americans' faith in how we choose our leaders is slipping, but we can do something about it. Pew’s Michael Caudell-Feagan highlights the importance of transparency, voter education, and local leadership in restoring trust in our elections. "Our democracy rests on trusting that our votes count," he writes for Trend magazine. https://pew.org/48ei29y

New research on the world's 100 largest marine protected areas reveals that there are no regulations or enforcement in a quarter of the area they cover. Why? Because they haven't been fully implemented. "Protected needs to mean protected," write former Secretary of State John Kerry and Pew's senior vice president, Tom Dillon, for Newsweek. And global leaders can change that at #COP16, happening now in Colombia.

Philadelphia is often called a “city of homeowners,” but today there are nearly as many renters as homeowners. And renters face high costs—in fact, 48% of renters spent 30% or more of their income on rent and utilities in recent years. We looked at two neighborhoods where renters have seen significant changes: Bustleton and East Germantown. In Bustleton, 58% of renters are cost-burdened (spending 30% of their income on rent). In East Germantown, 52% are cost-burdened. Our breakdown, including maps: https://pew.org/3Yc9n2N #Philadelphia #Renters #Housing #PewTrusts

From the federal government to the news media to higher education, some historically respected institutions are losing people's confidence. Some key Pew Research Center stats on public trust: ➡️ 22% trust the federal government to do the right thing always or most of the time. ➡️ 72% of Americans have an unfavorable view of Congress. ➡️ 28% have unfavorable views of both major political parties, up from 7% two decades ago. ➡️ 51% have unfavorable views of the Supreme Court. But most people—8 in 10—say we can increase confidence. Survey respondents have suggested being less partisan, embracing kindness, and electing inspiring leaders. Pew Research Center's very own Claudia Deane shares the numbers behind public mistrust in institutions and ideas on what can be done to reverse it in the latest issue of Trend magazine. https://pew.org/4ha1YcR
