The need for science and engineering professionals is expected to grow significantly in the coming years, but there is concern that there will not be enough U.S. STEM professionals to meet future demand. In order to cultivate and expand domestic talent, a recent article from Issues in Science and Technology argues that STEM opportunities should be made affordable, inclusive, and accessible. "If revolutionary scientific insights and technological innovations are to be made in America, then the scientists and engineers who imagine and create these insights and innovations must be developed and nurtured here in America too." The Florida Everglades have been dramatically degraded by drainage and infrastructure development during the past century, but the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) has helped to restore this crucial ecosystem. Our tenth biennial review of CERP highlights accelerated progress and provides recommendations to incorporate Indigenous knowledge into CERP activities, include climate change considerations in CERP planning and operations, and improve adaptive management procedures for more nimble decision-making in the future. Our recent report recommends greater national focus and investment in order to address the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on children and families, especially those in marginalized communities. The report examines the negative effects of the pandemic — on children's development and education as well as the health and economic well-being of families — and provides recommendations that offer a path forward to recover from the harms of the pandemic, address inequities, and prepare for the future. Pedro Conceição, Director of the Human Development Report Office at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), sat down with the National Academies to discuss their latest research on advancing human development and how the thinking around climate change has evolved, particularly when it comes to eradicating inequality. "I think over time, work by UNDP on climate has evolved along with the understanding that climate is central to the development challenges that we confront." #HDR2024 #ClimateChange #Inequality #UNDP #HumanDevelopmentReport #DevelopmentChallenges #EradicatingInequality #SustainableDevelopment #HDR, #HDI, #HumanClimateHorizons #HDR2025 Sarah Jackson-Han Don Gressett Stefano Pettinato Ebru Ertükel Kuran Walid Badawi Bryce Seockhwan H. On September 29 – 30, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) will hold its annual meeting and also celebrate its 60th anniversary. In advance of the meeting, NAE President John Anderson discussed his thoughts on that milestone, future challenges where engineers can provide solutions, and strengthening supply chains. "The hallmark of engineering is creativity — producing things and systems we didn’t know we needed but now could not live without, and it takes people to make that happen."
