The Lemelson Foundation has awarded a $2 million grant to our Climate Initiative grantee RMI to accelerate industrial decarbonization by sourcing, selecting, supporting, and scaling climate tech startups through RMI’s Third Derivative and Climate-Aligned Industries (CAI) programs. We’re happy to share that RMI and Third Derivative recently announced the launch of their Industrial Innovation Cohorts — a collaborative initiative to support and scale innovations that reduce carbon emissions in industrial sectors. Eric Lemelson, President of The Lemelson Foundation, shares: “The climate crisis requires fundamental transformation of the global economy. In addition to powering our homes, businesses, and transportation with cheap, carbon-free renewable energy, we must rapidly reduce the heavy emissions of the ‘hard-to-abate’ industries, including steel and concrete.” The Industrial Innovation Cohorts will identify and assist three startups developing new ways to decarbonize the cement, steel, and chemicals industries. We look forward to seeing the emerging startups and innovative products that will be launched from this project to address carbon emissions and other #climate challenges. Eric continues: “As an inventor, my father Jerry recognized the central role played by invention in solving so-called ‘wicked problems’ like climate change. I know that if he were alive today, he’d be as thrilled and inspired to support the work of RMI and Third Derivative to realize full industrial decarbonization as we are.” For more information about Third Derivative, RMI, and the Industrial Innovation Cohorts, read the full press release at: https://lnkd.in/dMWkp_E4 #ClimateTech #Decarbonization #Innovation #RMI #ThirdDerivative #Carbon #Steel #Industrial #Engineering #ClimateChange #ClimateAction

Our final day of #TAMC2024 was focused on looking ahead. We started with hearing from Eng. Millicent Alooh, HSC, PhD Student on being a biomedical engineer in a hospital setting. Then we broke up delegates into three different groups (Investment, Product, and Regulation), came up with priorities, and made a plan on how we can actually make those opportunities become a reality in the short-, medium-, and long-term. This means that we have the start of a work plan for the way forward in developing the #Africanmedtech sector! Wambui Nyabero Robert Karanja, PhD Sewu-Steve T. Our world is rapidly evolving, driven by groundbreaking inventions and technological advancements. But to truly unlock the full potential of innovation, we need a more inclusive and equitable ecosystem. ICYMI, in 2021, The Lemelson Foundation partnered with Lux Capital, Council on Competitiveness, SSTI, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Portland State University, VentureWell, Lemelson-MIT Program, and others to produce an analysis of the invention ecosystem that explored the areas of K-12 education, higher education, entrepreneurship, and industry, and that provided a roadmap to economic resilience and inclusive prosperity. The report summarized challenges, opportunities, and recommendations across the four domains, and key takeaways from our analysis included: 💡Diversity is key: a diverse range of perspectives and experiences fuels creativity and problem-solving. 💡Investing in early-stage research is critical: funding early-to-mid-stage R&D is crucial for nurturing groundbreaking ideas. 💡Bridging the digital divide is essential: ensure everyone has access to the tools and resources needed to participate in the innovation economy. 💡Fostering collaboration is necessary: break down silos between academia, industry, and government to accelerate progress. 💡Supporting entrepreneurs is a game-changer: provide mentorship, funding, and resources to help innovators turn their ideas into reality. To read the full report, visit: https://lnkd.in/g5YCWghv By working together, we can create a world where innovation benefits everyone, not just a select few. Let's build a future where creativity and ingenuity thrive, and where every individual has the opportunity to contribute to shaping our tomorrow. Special thanks to the following individuals for helping to make this report possible: Bilal Zuberi, Chad Evans, Danny Briere, David Coronado, Jason Rittenberg, Jonathan Gruber, Juan Barraza, Julie Lenzer, Leslie Flynn, Phil Weilerstein, Rob Atkinson, Shaheen Mamawala, MPA, and Stephanie Couch. #Innovation #FutureOfWork #Inclusion #Equity #STEM #Entrepreneurship

Earlier this year, Lemelson Foundation Senior Program Officer David Coronado participated in a workshop panel organized by the The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) and its Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable (GUIRR) about early entrepreneurship education and the future of the #STEM workforce. He shared that invention education not only helps students connect issues in their community with lessons learned in the classroom, it gives them space to build the confidence and practice problem-solving skills to create innovative solutions. David explains this further in a recent op-ed co-authored with Lemelson Foundation Executive Director Robert Schneider — “The Transformative Power of Invention Education.” Read the piece to find out how this hands-on, project-based method of teaching gets students engaged and prepared to tackle real-life challenges — and even become inventors themselves: https://bit.ly/3TT7ypf #InventionEducation #STEM #STEMlearning #STEMeducation #K12 #Innovation #Invention
