How do you distinguish between having imposter syndrome vs. being in the wrong job? Estefi Herrera was excited to land a job in the beauty industry. It was a position she didn’t have a lot of experience with — different from the one she’d applied to at the same company months before — but the hiring manager assured her that they were willing to teach her, if she was willing to learn. In retrospect, she realized she should have been more intentional about why she was taking the job and whether it was a good fit. “Month one was rough,” Herrera recalled, but she kept at it and said, “By month six, on paper, I was doing fine but I was never the kind of person that liked to do fine. I liked to do great.” Something wasn’t aligning. She wasn’t fulfilled by the work. Herrera struggled with what to do until she had the revelation that she wasn’t suffering from imposter syndrome, the role simply wasn’t a good fit for her. “I went from seeing this as a total failure to a win. To be introspective enough to realize that I’m not where I need to be and not care about what the outside world thinks — that takes guts. That’s the win. So after eight months of being in my dream industry and what I thought was my dream job, I put in my two weeks notice.” Herrera is now in a job she finds both challenging and rewarding. “Everything changed when I started approaching my career with more intention.” Do you have tips for being more intentional with your career choices?
