On August 31, 2024, our two-year Institute of Museum and Library Services Agriculture & Environment grant project came to a close. Our IMLS team photographed, conserved, researched, and catalogued more than 1,800 items throughout this project. One of our final big projects in the Photo Studio has been photographing more than 150 milk cartons. They are part of the Gwinn Dairy Collection, which was acquired in 1971 as a gift from David Gwinn, president of Pennbrook Milk Company. Painting a picture of dairy production history across the decades, these final cartons varied in style, shape and size. Because there were so many cartons — some flat sample cartons and some three-dimensional — we decided to use two separate setups to work through photographing them at the same time. The flat items were relatively easy to photograph, but the sheer number of them was challenging. Thanks to funding from the IMLS, you can now explore the variety of shapes, styles and uses of cartons like these, available in our Digital Collections: https://lnkd.in/gzbsRdC6. 🥛 Image 1: Bottle ready for photography 🐄 Image 2: Flat setup with cartons waiting 🥛 Image 3: Photographer with the 2-D carton setup 🐄 Image 4: Heart O’ Grape Bottle 🥛 Image 5: Milk Maid Milk Carton 🐄 Image 6: Pennbrook Standard Milk Sample Packaging

Last year, the Jackson House was carefully split in two for transport during its 1,060-mile journey from Selma, Alabama, to Michigan. After months in storage and meticulous site preparation, the two halves were finally reunited last week at its permanent site in Greenfield Village. We were fortunate to have Jawana Jackson onsite to witness the emotional moments of her childhood home coming back together again. 🏠 Learn more about the Jackson House, its historical significance and its future in Greenfield Village: https://lnkd.in/gU-kpR5b. 🏠 Watch how the home was moved from Alabama to Michigan last fall: https://lnkd.in/g_sSFe2s.

Meet Chef Robbie Bursey, the visionary behind the latest Chef's Table selections at Stand 44. Born and raised in Detroit, Chef Robbie first became interested in the culinary arts by helping her grandmother in the kitchen as a child. Since then, she has trained at The Art Institute of Michigan and the Art Institute of Las Vegas, where she earned both academic honors and professional success. We’re thrilled to have Chef Robbie on the team as Sous Chef here at The Henry Ford, where she lends her talents to our menus and leads the “farm to school” lunch program. Be sure to stop in Stand 44 to taste the late summer flavors featured in her limited-time menu: grilled cilantro chicken thighs with herb roasted potatoes, and vegan chaat masala with creamy chickpea curry, tofu and spicy vegetable salad.

In August 1924 – one hundred years ago – an interplanetary celestial event between Earth and Mars became an opportunity to “listen” for signs of life from the Red Planet. As the two planets aligned in what is called a Mars Opposition, astronomer David Peck Todd and engineer Charles Francis Jenkins led an experiment to capture radio signals that could, in theory, prove the existence of life on Mars. 📱 Read the full story on our blog: https://lnkd.in/ehBTXekq. 📻 Check out Jenkins’ radio receiver in our archives: https://lnkd.in/ePH8NDDX. 📰 Read an article about the 1924 Mars Opposition by The New York Times featuring Kristen Gallerneaux, our curator of communications and information technology and editor-in-chief of digital curation: https://lnkd.in/eaDV59fu. #astronomy #radio #MarsOpposition
