We need to act. More than five trillion pieces of plastic litter the ocean. Plastic from our homes and businesses ends up in the ocean and over time breaks down into microplastics. These tiny pieces of plastic move through the food chain from plankton to fish to humans. Microplastics have been found in nearly every part of the human body, with still-unknown long term impacts on human health. Researchers have discovered that people with these small plastic particles in their blood were 4.5 times more likely to suffer from heart attack, stroke, or death. That's why we support The Ocean Cleanup, an innovative and environmentally focused organization who has engineered a system capable of cleaning a football field-sized zone of the ocean every five seconds. "We need funders to champion innovative solutions to safeguard our oceans from plastic pollution," Helmsley Trustee Walter Panzirer writes in a recent Insight post. The time to act is now. Americares and Women’s Health to Wealth work to reduce school dropout rates and improve the quality of care for newborns and pregnant women in Ghana’s Ashanti and Bono regions. From school-based health clubs for adolescent girls to essential newborn care training for health workers, this Helmsley-supported collaboration aims to bolster health services at every stage of a woman’s life. In its first year alone, the program made a significant impact in the region. Fifty schools established girls’ clubs and over 3,400 girls have joined, decreasing the school dropout rate due to unintended pregnancy by 38%. Maternal and newborn health outcomes have also improved. By the end of 2023, 70% of target facility staff were training in essential newborn care, an important factor in reducing high neonatal mortality rates. Intestinal strictures are a common complication of Crohn’s disease defined by scarring (fibrosis), narrowing of the bowel, muscular thickening, and inflammation. Strictures can be very painful and often require surgical intervention — new treatment strategies are urgently needed. To help address this, the Stenosis Therapy and Anti-Fibrotic Research (STAR) Consortium has developed novel methods to measure intestinal strictures using both MR and CT imaging. These measures are important for drug development and allow for the effectiveness of antifibrotic therapies to be tested in clinical trials for CD. Helmsley supports the STAR Consortium through grants awarded to Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, and Alimentiv. Today we announced a partnership with The Trevor Project to support the mental health of LGBTQ+ young people across rural America. We are joining forces to develop a multimedia campaign to shed light on the issue, connect young people with the care they need, and encourage everyone to do their part to combat this crisis. Throughout the nine rural states we support, The Trevor Project's public training team will also deliver 50 training sessions to youth-serving organizations in order to build LGBTQ+ cultural competency among adults that work with kids. LGBTQ+ youth in rural areas have less access to mental health care than their urban counterparts and are more likely to consider or attempt suicide than LGBTQ+ youth nationwide. "No one should feel isolated simply because of who they are, yet the LGBTQ+ community is too often met with hostility," Helmsley Trustee Walter Panzirer said. “I look forward to collaborating with The Trevor Project to spread awareness of the serious challenges LGBTQ+ youth face and let them know that help, support and resources are available to help them thrive.” Read the announcement of our collaboration: https://lnkd.in/eVj8Cnyy

What can decades of satellite images tell us about flood risks, coastal erosion, and droughts? Rachel McDonnel, Deputy Director General for Research and Development at the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and Helmsley Trustee Walter Panzirer discuss how earth observation data can help pave the way for a sustainable future in Africa. Digital Earth Africa, which was launched with Helmsley's support, harnesses satellite data and develops tools that policymakers, scientists, and the private sector can use to make critical decisions about development around water resources in Africa. With the University of Minnesota, M Health Fairview, and Dr. Demetris Yannopoulos, we set out to revolutionize cardiac care when we funded the creation of the first mobile ECMO truck in the world and the ECMO Center of Excellence. This partnership has led to the treatment of over 1,000 cardiac arrest patients, and was recently featured by the New York Times Magazine, which called M Health Fairview's ECMO program "unparalleled in the country, if not the world, with survival rates and patient numbers that set it apart as the most advanced of its kind.” Last week, the ECMO Intake Center at the University of Minnesota Medical Center opened. This suite provides quick care for patients experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. After a person experiences a cardiac arrest, every second matters to ensure survival. ECMO is a form of life support that functions like the heart or lungs, and can give doctors more time to treat a cardiac arrest. “The time it takes from a 911 call to the person being placed on ECMO is the single most important predictor of outcomes,” said Demetris Yannopoulos, the visionary behind the ECMO truck and ECMO Center of Excellence. This new center will continue to speed up the process and save lives. Read more: https://bit.ly/3X3BT65
