"Alternative proteins are applicable to so many of today’s problems. And more and more people interested in wanting to have an impact in the real world will want to get involved in this field." — Dr. Rodrigo Ledesma-Amaro. A new sustainable protein center based at Imperial College London aims to boost academically-led open access science, enable greater collaboration between a wide range of scientists and engineers, and help build the UK's research ecosystem. Good Food Institute Europe spoke to the leader of the center, precision fermentation specialist Dr. Rodrigo Ledesma-Amaro about how the many ways this center will advance the growing field of alternative protein science. The Better Meat Co. received a 'no questions' letter from the U.S. FDA for their 'Rhiza' mycoprotein, a protein-packed ingredient made from filamentous fungi that offers improved texture and nutrition attributes. Read more 👉 https://bit.ly/3WmZ4sW The company is currently supplying restaurants in Northern California with Rhiza-based meat products but said they will need further capital to commercially scale their biomass fermentation operations to be able to supply to major CPG brands. Funding and workforce constraints pose two of the biggest bottlenecks at the top of the funnel for scientific innovation and scaling. As more talent, research funding, and investments flow into alternative proteins, the growth of the entire sector will accelerate. For more on the manufacturing capacity landscape and scaling strategies for fermentation-derived protein, check out our report from June 2023: https://bit.ly/3zsw8qx.

GFI's latest resource allows users to easily visualize and interact with geographical "hot spots" of alternative protein activity across the globe. Amy Huang explores our ecosystem map in a new Substack post: https://bit.ly/3WrIyYT On its face, the alternative protein industry may seem like a niche movement, representing well under one percent of the global meat market. But when you zoom out, you can see the ripple effects of an entire international community working tirelessly to build a future where alternative proteins are no longer alternative.

Broad consumer uptake requires companies to scale and reach price parity, but to finance this expensive process they need to have broad consumer uptake. So what’s the solution? In part 2 of Good Food Institute Europe's scale-up series, Carlotte Lucas explores target market selection for alternative protein startups as they scale, highlighting the importance of finding the right market at every stage of growth, and the importance of being able to pivot if needs demand it. 📊 While public support for #alternativeproteins is growing, A Global Innovation Needs Assessment found that governments must invest $10.1 billion in the sector on an annual basis to reap their full benefits, including 9.8 million jobs, $1 trillion in economic value, and bolstering climate, food security, and global health goals. That's a $9.8 billion funding gap. Though new announcements boosted prospects for future investment, the estimated $348 million spent in 2023 satisfied less than four percent of the total public funding need.
