Our founder, Drew Gerken, started The Furniture Project in 2013 after responding to an emergency call as an Omaha firefighter. Noticing that the family didn’t have beds, he helped gather enough furniture in 24 hours via social media to furnish their entire home. About us
The seed that would grow into the Furniture Project was planted in 2013, when Drew Gerken and several of his colleagues on the Omaha Fire Department met a family who did not have any furniture. When asked where they slept, the children showed the firefighters their suitcases and said that they put some of their clothing on the floor and cover up in the remaining. The firefighters returned to the fire station and decided that they must try to do something. They reached out via social media and within a day were able to fully furnish this small apartment and had a few things left over. That first family may have no idea what an impact they made on the community that day, but they continue to inspire us to go out and serve those in need in our community.

As the community responds to the devastating tornado, The Furniture Project is working with its Agency Partners to distribute furniture and household items to anyone who has been affected. There is a tremendous need for all essential furniture items such as tables, couches, and small kitchen appliances. Household items such as place settings, linens, towels, and new pillows are also a great need. Items can be dropped off at our warehouse at 10808 J Street, Monday – Friday from 10:00am-3:00pm and on Saturdays from 10:00am-1:00pm. The Furniture Project is able to pick up some donated items, however, due to the high volume of requests there is a waitlist.
