I expected to learn many things at "The New Pause Symposium" hosted by @thisistheswell I did not expect was to have my life forever changed by Carol Tavris Ph.D. For those, who aren't familiar with this brilliant social scientist, I highly recommend reading her books, "Mistakes Were Made: but not by me," and @estrogenmatter co-authored by another favorite human, Avrum Bluming MD. Our discussion of cognitive dissonance was in relation to the irrefutable evidence that the 2002 Women's Health Initiative got it wrong when it came to the safety of menopausal hormone therapy for most women. Despite loads of evidence supporting the cardioprotective, neuroprotective, and bone health benefits of estrogen, the WHI investigators refuse to hold a new press conference to walk back statements that took healthspan away from an entire generation of women. Carol and I had deep discussions about the current state of polarization in this country and like with the WHI study, it comes down to severe cognitive dissonance. As human beings, we don't like to be wrong. We carry deep shame and most of us will double down on our beliefs rather than change them. Thanks to the work of Dr. Tavris and Dr. Bluming, woman who would never have the opportunity to even learn about MHT (HRT), will now have it as an option. Whether or not to take hormones should be an individual choice. Who we vote for should be individual choice. At @feelfullyyou Juilette works with women to help them reconnect with their bodies after trauma and during the menopausal transition. In our @thefuchsiatent conversation she advised us to each practice saying no to something at least once a day. As a recovering people pleaser, I find it so hard to just say no without all the explanations, but with practice I find it getting easier. As we rebuild our relationship with self and our bodies, and work on new levels of intimacy in our partnerships, knowing what feels like a strong yes, vs. a hell no is critical. Getting to help organizations and midlife women thrive together is the honor of a lifetime. Here are my 5 key takeaways from yesterday's conversation with @Boston College Center for Work & Family. ✅ Most leaders and organizations want to do right by all employees, and need to increase awareness and education to support midlife women. ✅ Menopause sits at the intersection of ageism and sexism creating stigma and fear for women, especially those seeking advancement. ✅ Misconceptions around the time frame for menopause (actually 4-10 years and sometimes longer) and symptoms (TEMPORARY neurocognitive changes are the most debilitating to knowledge workers), deter urgency. ✅ Supporting women through the transition, doesn't have to be expensive, and can yield increased productivity 📈 , enhanced job satisfaction, strong organizational commitment, gender parity in the senior leadership pipeline, and so much more. ✅ Failing to support women through midlife, can expose businesses to unnecessary legal risk. Last Thursday The Fuchsia Tent LLC proudly sponsored our first menopause event, hosted by Let's Talk Menopause and Caire Beauty. I had countless conversations with women who shared their experiences with the menopausal transition, and the most common theme of the night was how they have been impacted in the workplace. The sheer number of women I met, who have left jobs, or are considering leaving jobs was staggering, and there was a universal feeling that many workplaces still lack support and understanding for midlife women. While it is wonderful that the conversation around menopause is all over the media, with celebs from Halle Berry, Oprah, and Drew Barrymore shouting about it from the rooftops, the conversation is still taboo and stigmatized at work. According to a Bonafide Health, "Over 75% of women do not currently receive the amount of support they require in the workplace," which leads to absenteeism, disengagement, lower job satisfaction and higher medical costs. It is time to change the workplace conversation for individuals and organizations. The business case for compassionate leadership is clear. The business case for autonomy in the workplace is also clear. So, why then when it comes to menopause and mental health. separate or combined, do we ask employees to disclose their reasons for needing the time off, or view asking for time as weakness? During a recent interview with @embr labs CEO, @Elizabeth Gazda we discussed the imperative for US organizations to develop more compassionate, autonomous cultures as a means of providing support for those suffering from menopause symptoms at work. Just like with well-being, we can implement point solutions all day long, but until we decide that listening and responding with compassion are the minimum standard, we will continue to see humans struggle.
