Working to create systemic change through funding and supporting initiatives that highlight inequalities while tackling them through structural, long-term strategies. The Foundation for Systemic Change (FSC) exists to advance justice and equality around the world, driving change that produces comprehensive, sustainable – not episodic – impact. Built on the premise that lasting change can only be achieved through a systemic approach that addresses all factors responsible for major societal challenges, FSC invests in organizations and individuals promoting positive, systemic change at all levels of society across the globe.

I’m so honored to be a mentor for The Foundation for Systemic Change's Fred Ross Systemic Change Journalism Competition! The contest encourages high school journalists across the country to report on the systemic change taking place in their own communities. The contest is named after grassroots organizer Fred Ross who dedicated his life to building member-led movements to change institutions and policies in meaningful ways that improve lives. My goal with this contest is to help a high school journalist find and write about a Fred Ross in their community! Thank you to Morgan McDonough, my OG journalism buddy, for connecting me with this opportunity! 🤓

Congratulations to Cherry Creek High School sophomore Peter Philpott for earning an honorable mention for his reporting titled “Jeff Boyce is No Longer Remaining Apolitical”. 🎉 Peter explored the universal controversy on climate change and humanitarian effects on the environment through the perspective of his local Environmental Science teacher, Jeff Boyce. Peter’s submission focused on Boyce’s commitment to the environmental impacts of climate change and the influential role he has played in his students’ lives. As the Managing Editor and Assistant News Editor for the Union St. Journal, his reporting includes political/breaking news and of course, his baseball column titled “Peanuts and Cracker Jack”.⚾ Outside of the newsroom, Peter enjoys artistic photography and is a member of his high school’s marching band! 🎺 What’s next for Peter? He aspires to be a political-investigative reporter, with a focus on highlighting large-scale issues from local perspectives. When high school journalism students Lucy Walker and Elizabeth Hu began their submission for the #FredRossSystemicJournalismCompetition, their inspiration came from their school's LGBTQ+ alliance and the compelling narratives shared by Texas' transgender youth. 🌈 Elizabeth and Lucy are both juniors at St. Johns High School in Houston, TX, and plan to pursue journalism majors in college. Lucy and Elizabeth currently hold editor roles for their school’s student-run newspaper, The Review. This year’s Systemic Change Photography Prize goes to Sarah Fretell for “Guardian of the Forest.” ❗📸 At the end of their patrol, the Santa Rosillo Forest Guardians strip down, put on a few traditional accents, and excitedly ask for a portrait. They are proud of what they do and the status it has given them in the community. Since being recognized by local officials, it has forced the campesinos to treat them and the land with more respect. This marks three years of the Systemic Change Photography prize and partnership between The Foundation for Systemic Change and Social Documentary Network! Congratulations to Sarah! 🎉 Learn more about Sarah and “Guardian of the Forest” on our website: https://lnkd.in/gD6EEKzt #FoundationforSystemicChange #Photography
We are happy to announce the winners of our annual “Systemic Change Award,” in partnership with SIMA! Congratulations to the brilliant team of artists and documentarians behind the film “PAY OR DIE.” 🏆 "PAY OR DIE" documents the insulin affordability crisis in the U.S., focusing on three families struggling to afford insulin for chronic illnesses. It highlights the human toll of this crisis, including a mother-daughter duo losing their home and a family grieving the loss of their son due to insulin rationing. The Systemic Change Award is awarded to a film that demonstrates how responsible, comprehensive, and sustainable solutions can create long-term change. We are so thrilled to introduce our other second-place winner of the #FredRossSystemicJournalismCompetition, Elaine Jiang! Congratulations! 🤩 It all started with a post on Instagram about union-busting, from there Elaine uncovered numerous stories of individuals striking due to unfair treatment. This encouraged her submission in addressing inadequate corporate leadership and workplace conditions. Elaine is currently a junior at Carlmont High School in Belmont, California. Not only is she a student writer and podcast producer for Scot Scoop News, but also an editor for the Highlander! Alongside her passion for journalism, Elaine also enjoys playing badminton and watching the latest shows on Netflix. 🏸🎬 So, what’s next for Elaine? She would like to continue her journalism journey to tackle systemic issues and shine a light on others working to fight them. Keep doing what you’re doing, Elaine! 🙌 Click the link to take a closer look at Kara & Elaine’s submission. https://lnkd.in/dD75kJQS #LaborMovement #SystemicChange #HighSchoolReporter #FredRoss #FSC
