The Fortune Society is committed to sharing the inspiring work and experiences of criminal justice reform leaders in our community and beyond. Puppies Behind Bars is a project founded by Gloria Gilbert Soga in 1997. The project’s mission is to have incarcerated people in the New York area train puppies to eventually become service or working dogs. The puppies are temporarily housed in a special unit with incarcerated volunteers who can attend classes and go through their daily training. Puppies Behind Bars offers an opportunity for incarcerated Individuals to have the joy offered by an animal companion while also serving their community.
