Ever wondered what it's like to be a River Ranger? At Gayini Nimmie-Caira, the largest remaining wetland in the Murrumbidgee, River Rangers Cody Cosson and Kai Hearne are out there making a real difference on Country. Their work is varied as the seasons change and includes everything from surveying fish with the Flow-MER team to creating firebreaks, slashing weeds, and even baiting foxes. Kai’s advice to anyone thinking about joining? “Go for it 100%! Flow-MER Forum 2024 - that's a wrap! Over two days, we heard the latest science from across the Flow-MER Program, as well as reflected on what 10 years of the program has achieved - which is a lot! We also learned how the program has driven innovation in science and research, strengthened relationships between science, management and community, and how the program is informing adaptive water management across the Murray Darling Basin. Thank you so much to everyone who attended, who gave a presentation, and who helped organise such a terrific event. I’m excited to have been at the first day of the Flow-MER Annual Forum, meeting with all those involved in our amazing environmental water monitoring and science program. I appreciate the dedication, expertise and combined knowledge that everyone involved puts into the important monitoring, evaluation and research of the environmental water we deliver in the Murray-Darling Basin. We’re constantly learning from the science the program produces, which enables us to be confident in our decisions around delivering water for the environment. We are undertaking such a novel environmental restoration activity that has never been undertaken at this scale anywhere else in the world - to protect and restore the environment of the Murray-Darling Basin. We manage a massive public asset on behalf of the Australian people, and we are subject to more rules and regulations than most water users. We have substantial outcomes-monitoring and public reporting requirements. Flow-MER ensures we are accountable and making the best decisions. After being wiped out across the mid-Murray during the Millennium Drought, almost 1200 Southern Pygmy Perch have been reintroduced into Red Tank lagoon at Barmah National Park. The supply of environmental water to Red Tank Lagoon has enabled the return of these fish to an area where they have been locally extinct since 2007. These small fish, measuring approximately 65mm, benefit from the habitat and protection provided by the lagoon's vegetation and fallen timber. The release is the result of a collaborative effort between Goulburn Broken CMA, North Central Catchment Management Authority, Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation, Parks Victoria, and NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service.
