What if you only had 30 seconds to interview for a job, and those 30 seconds decided if you got the position or not?
How would you present yourself? What information would you put forward to make sure you stood out? How would you showcase you’re the right fit in such a short time?
If you’re a content creator, business owner, or using social media to build your personal or professional brand in any way, that’s how you should be looking at your social media profiles. Those 150 characters, those first few posts…if a brand representative or a customer looked at your profile for 30 seconds, would they have all the information they need to know to invest in you?
An optimized profile can make the difference between getting hired for a paid partnership or not, or gaining a new customer for your business. Your profile is essentially your social media resume, so make it count.
A strong social media profile should have:
👤YOUR NAME: This sounds obvious but you’d be surprised how many creators just go by a blog name! It’s best to have a consistent name across all your channels so you are easily searchable. If you’re optimizing your profile for your business, make sure your business name is consistent across the web.
😁AN SEO-FRIENDLY TITLE: A great way to improve searchability is by adding a title to your display name, ex. “Content Creator”, “Style Expert”, “Marketing Professional” etc. Think of keywords that people may use to search up when finding profiles in a specific niche or product category.
📍YOUR LOCATION: For content creators, brands often search creators who are located in specific key markets, so let them know where to find you! This is also essential for receiving event opportunities. If someone is building an invite list and can’t find out where you’re located, you’re not getting that invite! And of course, customers are often using social media to search for local businesses in their area.
🖊YOUR TAGLINE: Use those 150 characters to succinctly describe the main categories you speak to on your page, or a tagline that quickly and memorably describes your business. “Fashion, Beauty, Travel”, “On-Trend Clothes for the Stylish Mom” or “Tips for living a glamorous life at any age” are examples of bios that are short, sweet, and to the point, just the way we like it!
📩CONTACT INFO: Your email should be IN YOUR BIO, not just as a button on Instagram. Why? A lot of people use the desktop version of Instagram to search for new brands, creators, and people to follow, and the buttons don’t show up on the desktop version of Instagram. Make it as easy as possible for them to reach out to you.
And there you go. You have your optimized profile and are ready to be discoverable for brands—and followers, too!
