About us

The Barnes Family started DAISY in 1999 to say a profound thank you to nurses for the extraordinary skill and compassion they provide patients and families every day. Our experience with nurses during son Patrick Barnes' eight week hospitalization showed us that direct care nurses do super-human work that is rarely recognized. We had no idea that today, more than 5,000 healthcare facilities and schools of nursing in all 50 states and 32 other countries and territories would honor their nurses all year long with The DAISY Award. Over 2,100,000 nominations have been written, describing how a nurse has impacted a patient or family. Clearly, the Barnes Family are not the only people compelled to say thank you to nurses! The strategic value of this kind of meaningful recognition is now being proven in research study after study. Impacts include contribution to a healthy work environment, nurse satisfaction, compassion satisfaction, patient satisfaction, and cultural transformation. It's remarkable what happens when a healthcare organization focuses some attention on all the good that's going on. We also honor nursing students with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Students and nursing faculty with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Faculty. Through our J. Patrick Barnes Grants, we support nursing research and EBP projects with grants to nurses.

Today, we would like to highlight DAISY Honoree Haley Jenus! A patient’s sister wrote Haley’s nomination after her brother attempted to take his own life and was in the hospital. While he was on life support, Haley would always talk to him, explain what she was doing, and call him by name. She consistently checked to make sure the family was okay, asked if they needed anything and answered all their questions without making them feel silly for asking them. On the patient’s last day of life, Haley continued to check on the family and keep them updated on what was happening. The patient was an organ donor, and while the process was long, Haley made sure the family knew what was going on. She also ensured the family would have special last moments with the patient. The sister said, “I walked with my brother and the team to the operating room doors, and as I said my final goodbyes, she (Haley) gave me comfort I will remember for the rest of my life.” Thank you, Haley, for comforting this family during such a difficult time. Congratulations on being a DAISY Honoree. Read Haley's nomination story here: https://lnkd.in/ghRUp-37

Today we would like to highlight DAISY Honoree Jake Geary! Jake is a nurse whose compassion and dedication saved a life. When a young patient struggling with mental health issues tried to leave the hospital with plans to harm himself, Jake didn't hesitate. He chased after him, shouting, “People love you! We just want to help you!” His words and actions stopped the patient, leading him back to safety. The patient later admitted that Jake's care made him reconsider his actions. Thanks to Jake, the patient is now accepting the help he needs. The nominator said they are incredibly grateful to have a nurse like Jake on their team. Thank you, Jake, for all you do daily for your patients. Congratulations on being a DAISY Honoree! Read Jake’s nomination story here: https://lnkd.in/gCnFSX9t
