Driving a shift toward humane technology that supports our well-being, democracy, and shared reality.
About us
Together with our partners, the Center for Humane Technology (CHT) is dedicated to radically reimagining our digital infrastructure. Our mission is to drive a comprehensive shift toward humane technology that supports our well-being, democracy, and shared information environment. From the dinner table to the corner office to the halls of government, our work mobilizes millions of advocates, technologists, business leaders, and policymakers through media campaigns, working groups, and high-level briefings. Our journey began in 2013 when Tristan Harris, then a Google Design Ethicist, created the viral presentation, “A Call to Minimize Distraction & Respect Users’ Attention.” The presentation, followed by two TED talks and a 60 Minutes interview, sparked the Time Well Spent movement and laid the groundwork for the founding of the Center for Humane Technology (CHT) as an independent 501c3 nonprofit in 2018. CHT was thrilled to support the development and release of the record-shattering Netflix documentary 'The Social Dilemma' from director Jeff Orlowski on the existential threats posed by social media, reaching an estimated 100 million people.

Gary Marcus has been called #AI’s loudest critic. He thinks the technology will soon hit a wall, especially when it comes to generative AI. But he also thinks we’re woefully unprepared for the risks of the AI we already have. On #YourUndividedAttention this week, Gary defends his AI skepticism and discusses what we need to do to get the rollout of technology right: https://bit.ly/3XHybzu

#AI is moving fast. We needs laws that will too. Check out our policy lead Casey Mock's breakdown of the CHT framework for incentivizing responsible AI development on the YUA Youtube page: https://bit.ly/4gtbCXO

#BREAKING: The Center for Humane Technology has released its Framework for Incentivizing Responsible Artificial Intelligence Development and Use, which 🌐 Provides a set of principles for lawmakers to utilize when crafting new AI policies 🌐 Helps to certify responsible development and use of emerging AI systems 🌐 Promotes accountability to individual and business consumers 🌐 Ensures that the companies behind these products are prioritizing safety over profit. A new liability law tailored to these AI systems would allow Congress to set limits regarding the potential harms that require mitigation. Read the full framework to see how: https://lnkd.in/ejDFuEd7

In The Atlantic, Jonathan Haidt, Zach Rausch, and Lennon Torres argue that it’s past time for laws to protect kids from the most pernicious features of social media–starting with the Kids Online Safety and Privacy Act, which passed the Senate 91-3 this July: https://bit.ly/3TqhwPl

#AI is moving fast. As companies race to roll out more capable AI models–with little regard for safety–the downstream risks become harder to counter. On #YourUndividedAttention this week, our policy director Casey Mock outlines a new legal framework to incentivize better AI through products liability law. https://bit.ly/3XF8wsa

Tonight, Sept. 12, at 8pm ET, our co-founders Tristan Harris and Aza Raskin will join Oprah to discuss the promise and perils of AI. Oprah decided to produce this special after seeing Tristan and Aza’s presentation on the dilemma our society faces with AI. Right now AI is being built like a Jenga tower – a rapidly growing system with an increasingly shaky foundation. And while it has incredible potential to make life better for billions of people, that promise is intertwined with its perils. We must do the work to minimize the risks and maximize the potential. And we need to do it now – AI’s growth is so rapid that if we don’t act now to stabilize this foundation, it will undermine and overwhelm us. That work includes national and international policy that ensures liability for AI harms, implements protections for whistleblowers and other insiders who come forward with important safety information, and requires that AI developers invest in safety efforts. This is the slowest AI will ever be. Now is the time to ensure that future advancements in AI benefit all of humanity, not one country, or one corporation, or one small group of people. https://lnkd.in/eQXqUnP6
