𝐁𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐩: Brian, we would like to see that candidate, Sarah, again. 𝐌𝐞: Oh, Sarah, "the unicorn" I introduced to you two weeks ago. 𝐁𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐩: Yes, that's right. We really like her. 𝐌𝐞: Well, sorry, but she took another job last week. 𝐁𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐩: What!? What!? (completely shocked, disappointed, and gobsmacked). 𝐌𝐞: Sir, I told you not to wait. She is a unicorn, and I told you that she would get snapped up very fast. That wasn't a sales pitch; that's my 20 years of experience talking. 𝐁𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐩: (wind out of sails, exasperated, and very concerned) Umm... Ok... Gee.... What about Amy, the other one we liked? 𝐌𝐞: Sorry, but she also took a job last week. She's no longer available either. Sir, why did you wait two weeks to get back to me? You were the one who said this was an emergency and that you were hiring immediately. 𝐁𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐩: I just can't believe this. What a mess. (loses temper, hangs up phone). THE TAKEAWAY: Employers, the top candidates in any industry are like professional athletes. They are in demand. If you want the best of the best, then treat the top talent with respect and don't drag your feet. The other employers who know a once-in-a-lifetime chance when they see it will snatch your "unicorn" away from you, and then it's back to the drawing board.
