“If we view our current challenges as opportunities, with a healthy dose of pragmatism, they can become the foundation of a better economic future.” #BTeam Leader and Allianz Group CEO Oliver Bäte shares his reflections on risk, “change fatigue” and the role of business in tackling shared challenges following a discussion with BlackRock CEO Larry Fink and Bloomberg’s Francine Lacqua at the Berlin Global Dialogue 2024.

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of joining Larry Fink, CEO of BlackRock, and moderator Francine Lacqua of Bloomberg for a thought-provoking session at Berlin Global Dialogue 2024 where we explored the causes of current challenges and the role of leaders in addressing them, from growing polarization to lagging economic growth. We discussed the inconvenient truth of rising risks and how managing them requires a willingness to adapt, transform, and build resilience. To succeed, however, the concerns and desires of customers and electorates must be at the forefront of decision-makers’ minds. Larry and I agree that we also need to focus on the future, not on the past. There is no room for nostalgia or to rest on past achievements. Instead, if we view our current challenges as opportunities, with a healthy dose of pragmatism, they can become the foundation of a better economic future. We already see the potential. As risks increase, technical excellence will continue to deliver competitive insurance solutions. And, as Larry pointed out, the development of wider and deeper capital markets will contribute to risk mitigation by defusing risks and reducing price volatility. Yesterday’s frank discussion also addressed what leaders can do to rebuild trust and fight the polarization caused by what I call “change fatigue.” Change, while inevitable and often necessary, has to connect to the real needs of citizens. Delivering on basic quality of life issues, like healthcare, education, and affordable housing, is the most effective way to counter populist rhetoric and empty promises. Now is the time for serious dialogue and pragmatic solutions that work to restore stability, encourage optimism, and re-ignite global growth. We cannot expect governments alone to solve all these issues. Business can be part of the solution. That’s why Larry and I both emphasized the willingness and necessity of business to contribute to public-private partnerships. In our experience, such partnerships have been effective in finding pragmatic common ground, whether at the local, national, or international level. Thank you Larry Fink for your insights, Francine Lacqua for guiding our meaningful discussion, and Berlin Global Dialogue organizers for creating this opportunity. I look forward to continuing the conversation and exploring how businesses can work together with governments to help navigate rising risks and drive sustainable, inclusive growth. #BGD2024 #Allianz

“America must be clear on its climate leadership, following through with real commitments at both the G20 meetings and the international negotiations that must set a strong climate finance goal this year.” #BTeam Leaders Mary Robinson (former President of Ireland) and Sharan Burrow (former General Secretary, International Trade Union Confederation - ITUC) are among 83 powerful voices calling for action on #ClimateFinance in the lead-up to COP29 Azerbaijan. #TurnThePageOnClimate SHE Changes Climate #G20

⏰ It's Time to #TurnThePageOnClimate 🌿 Throughout history, women have led and responded with courage and vision, from the forefront of every crisis. Today, we drive the transformation towards a cleaner future. That's why, joined by 83 brilliant leaders from women’s networks across the world, #SHEChangesClimate is calling on the U.S. and global leaders to turn the page and move forward on climate change in the lead-up to COP29 Azerbaijan. Published as a full page in the The New York Times on Sunday 29th September, the letter encourages sustained U.S. leadership and action on climate finance in a time when many other news topics continually eclipse climate action. We have seen hope re-emerge at the UN this week, as global leaders reaffirmed their commitment to act on the climate crisis, transition away from polluting fossil fuels, and back an overhaul of the international financial architecture. While the U.S. has made significant progress in advancing clean energy investments and moving forward with its climate agenda, we recognize that much more is needed to slash emissions and rebuild global trust in a year of unprecedented weather extremes. The U.S. has an opportunity to lead decisively in upcoming climate negotiations, and today we’re here to say: we stand ready to back you as you act on climate change. Through the Corporate Leaders Network for climate action we’re calling for Robust Laws for #MoreRenewables. This means supporting #businesses to identify the kinds of #laws that will help them play their part in the #energytransition. Globally 🌍 we need to triple renewable capacity by 2030, to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius. There are many different types of laws which will help accelerate the implementation of renewables, while also safeguarding people 🙋♀️ and nature 🌷 For example: 🏋♀️ Include strong language on renewables in international treaties 🤝 Reform investor-state dispute settlement to preclude actions which protect fossil fuels 💨 Streamline permitting and grid access ✅ Remove fossil fuel subsidies and redirect subsidies towards renewables instead 📚 Ensure that climate, nature, and human rights considerations are embedded in environmental impact assessment 👉👉Register your interest here: https://lnkd.in/eNpg_CPc What kinds of laws do you think we should put in place to accelerate the energy transition?💡 Our call for #RobustLaws forms part of CISL’s Business Leadership Campaign, which is calling for strong courageous leadership which builds and advocates for structural market changes such that sustainability is rewarded, and unsustainable activity becomes commercially unviable. How are brands embedding sustainability within their business strategies and operations? Is consumer culture sustainable? At The New York Times #ClimateForward event during #ClimateWeekNYC, #BTeam Leaders Jesper Brodin (CEO, Ingka Group | IKEA) and Ryan Gellert (CEO, Patagonia) discussed consumer trends, previewed new initiatives their brands are testing and shared insights from their own leadership journeys. On progress being made at IKEA, Patagonia and elsewhere, Jesper said: “We are transitioning the economy to a climate-smart, resource-smart, cost-smart, business-smart, brand-smart economy. We are on the cusp of that right now.” On the role of governments in accelerating this transition, Ryan suggested: “Start creating more regulation to limit the wrong things. Start creating incentives to do the right things.” Watch the full conversation: https://lnkd.in/egp9Gdjs

🆕 The United Nations General Assembly yesterday adopted a new agreement called a "Pact for the Future", which further recognized the need to address the primary cause of climate change: burning fossil fuels. The pact is clear that we need to see a just, orderly and equitable transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems, and a phase out of inefficient fossil fuel subsidies (https://lnkd.in/dFbwNGtb). It reiterates the historic agreements made at COP28 in Dubai last year. Now people are looking to governments to make good on commitments and get down to business. As this year’s #ClimateWeekNYC theme states: It’s Time. Thousands of businesses are already forging a path from #FossilToClean – because climate risk is business risk (https://lnkd.in/e-R4b_7D). And business is calling for governments to set ambitious NDCs backed by clear targets, policies, and timelines, for phasing out fossil fuels, shifting incentives to clean energy, and working with business to deploy solutions at speed and scale.   In short, #NDCs must offer enough clarity for companies to invest confidently in the clean energy industries of the future, and the natural systems that underpin them. In the race to clean solutions, those companies and countries that transition soonest and fastest will be the first to reap the benefits of a clean energy economy. Those that wait risk falling behind.   The world came together at #COP28 in unprecedented agreement and has re-affirmed that commitment through this pact.  It’s now time for world leaders to turn words into policy action and invest in a just transition from fossil fuels to clean energy solutions. To protect our communities, our businesses and our economies from the worst climate impacts. It’s time to get down to business.  🔗 See the call to action: https://lnkd.in/gf9A3Ace #WMBC #Mission2025
