2023 Crain's Notable Leaders in Sustainability Founder & Design Principal of APMonarch and Founder of Arquitina, a national non-profit
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Women's Leadership Summit is a wrap! I hear they received 100's of proposals to present on this year's theme "Building Resilience". So it was an honor that our proposal was selected. You know when things are just right, they are effortless. I reached out to 3 incredible fellow firm owners Chyanne Husar Jennifer Park, and Katherine Darnstadt Our panel was awesome! We heard from architect Sumayya Valley and how her lived experience of being a Muslim Woman growing up in a very segregated South Africa as Apartheid was ending shapes her brilliant architecture. Lastly, it was being amongst friends and making new ones that make WLS empowering. Learning about what informs them while shaping the architecture they create. For me, WLS reinforces why I set out be an architect and reinforces "las ganas" to continue to create space, share the stories, and help elevate Latinas in Architecture. Arquitina had a blast at the Allsteel Experience Center lunch (thank you 🫶🏽) and showing off wearing our swag at dinner. We were grateful to have been joined by Sen. Omar Aquino to speak about hosting the bill to cancel the rolling clock. Thank you!! #liftasweclimb

"Resilience isn't just about getting through—it's about thriving." 2025 AIA President-Elect Evelyn Lee, FAIA, NOMA, spoke directly to the heart of this year's Women's Leadership Summit theme. Building resilience isn’t what you do alone; it’s a community effort. To emphasize that & share knowledge, our keynote panel discussed the twists and turns of career paths, discovering how to keep our current and future teammates inspired—all while navigating the ins and outs of hybrid and remote work. 💡 The panel included: 📌 Moderator: Jen Johnson, Chief Product Officer at ConstructConnect 📌 Evelyn Lee, FAIA, NOMA, 2025 AIA President-Elect 📌 Danielle Tillman, AIA, NOMA, Managing Principal of bKL Architecture LLC 📌 RaMona Westbrook AIA, LEED AP, Founder and President of Brook Architecture 💙 Thank you to ConstructConnect for sponsoring this panel! Then, our impactful keynote speaker, Kimberlé Crenshaw, took the stage. She discussed how an intersectional approach can build a more resilient profession that can weather turbulent times and address today’s most pressing issues. Did you know we hosted our second student delegation at WLS? 🎓 AIA Chicago coordinated with the local NAAB-accredited architecture programs and gathered a group of current students to attend WLS at no cost. The students were able to network with AIA leadership, including #AIANAC, AIA Chicago board members, Kimberly Dowdell, AIA, NOMAC; Lakisha Ann Woods, CAE; and Evelyn Lee, FAIA! To end the final day of the summit, we focused on building that community support through local firm visits, tours, and dine arounds. We hope you made new connections! While #AIAWLS is now over, we are committed to supporting #WomenInArchitecture all year. Check out our website to learn more: https://bit.ly/3Y60Z4T & of course, we can't wait to see you next year! 💙 #Architect #AEC

“Our empathy makes us exceptional.” Empathy is not a weakness; it makes us powerful—together. That empowering message is how AIA EVP/CEO Lakisha Ann Woods, CAE, started day two at #AIAWLS! 🎉 Attendees experienced crisp fall weather in Chicago while they traveled to our first keynote session this morning. 🍂 To honor our time in this city, we started with a panel celebrating the influence of women designers on Chicago, now and into the future. Moderator Natasha Engan, SVP of Global Sales at Deltek, joined panelists Kimberly Dowdell, AIA, NOMAC, 2024 AIA president; Ciere Boatright, commissioner, Chicago Department of Planning and Development; and Gia Biagi, principal of urbanism & civic impact, Studio Gang, discussed this city of innovation and architectural triumph. 💙 Thank you to Deltek for sponsoring this insightful panel! This year’s theme at the Women’s Leadership Summit is building resilience. The keynote conversation between Sumayya Vally, Founder and Principal of Counterspace, and 2024 AIA President Kimberly Dowdell, AIA, NOMAC, reflected this and inspired attendees. For lunch, 🍲 we had a Firm Leaders Luncheon, sponsored by Owens Corning, designed to make personal connections with fellow industry leaders and innovators. A dynamic panel featuring women leaders representing AIA, AIA Chicago, the National Building Museum, and the National Organization of Minority Architects shared thoughts on how to build a resilient community of design professionals. Breakout sessions filled the morning and afternoon, but attendees had time for reflection and recovery 💭 with Dr. Akua K. Boateng, PhD, right before the Welcome Reception at the Old Post Office in Chicago! Day two at #AIAWLS has been filled with education, community, and joy. ✨ Let’s make the last of WLS the best! #Architecture #AEC #WomenInArchitecture #Design

Day One of the The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Women’s Leadership Summit (#WLS2024). AIA Chicago is so pleased to be the host city and welcome 800+ architects and allied professionals to Chicago - plus our incredible hometown members and chapter leaders. This afternoon I had the privilege of giving a walking tour for attendees. It’s always such a thrill to lead a group up the stairs of the Chicago Cultural Center and watch first time visitors smile and catch their breath at seeing the Tiffany dome. More updates from WLS to come!

Women’s Leadership Summit started today in Chicago! 🎉 This year, we’re marking the 15th anniversary of #AIAWLS with three years of national female leadership and record female membership here at AIA. These next few days, we’re ecstatic—and honored—to host the largest network of women in the AEC industry. Today, we’ve connected in workshops focused on leadership, firm success, and mindfulness. Afterward, attendees toured some of Chicago’s most iconic landmarks and even had time for birdwatching. 🐦 Thank you to AIA Chicago, Chicago Architecture Center, and Studio Gang! Both evening events were sold out! 🎟️ The Chicago Architecture Center had an enlightening exhibit showcasing women architects’ contributions in Chicago. The open house at Studio Gang’s headquarters connected their firm leadership with attendees and gave a glimpse into the firm’s inner workings. See you tomorrow morning for our first keynote! 👋🏼 Learn more about how we’re supporting women in architecture: https://bit.ly/3XZnatf Thank you to our Featured sponsors for supporting this event & community: Andersen Windows & Doors, ConstructConnect, Deltek, James Hardie, Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope, OKNOPLAST US, Owens Corning, and Studio Gang #Architecture #WomenInArchitecture #Architect #Equity
