Children and teachers should be able to go back to school and be safe to learn and grow, not be put in danger. We grieve with the community of Apalachee High School for the innocent lives lost due to the tragic mass shooting yesterday in Winder, Georgia. This marks the 45th school shooting in the United States this year. Enough is enough. We must come together to address this public health crisis head on and keep our loved ones safe. September is Suicide Prevention Month, and together with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs we are launching new creative as a part of the ongoing national “Don’t Wait. Reach Out.” campaign. The new work acknowledges that it can be difficult for Veterans to reach out if they’re struggling – but in the eyes of their loved ones, seeking help is an act of bravery. People who are close to Veterans are often the first to notice when they are struggling, and letting a Veteran know you’re there for them can help start a conversation. Don’t Wait. Reach Out. ONDCP co-hosted an Overdose Awareness Day event with OPE this week at the White House, and I’m still thinking about the incredible panel discussion. It’s inspiring to see so many people turning their grief and pain into power and hope. A big theme was stigma. We heard from families who wished their loved ones could have felt safe, not shame, disclosing their drug use. We heard from Stephen Murray about too many people using alone and how the Safespot Overdose Hotline is offering a compassionate response. We heard from Keli McLoyd about the importance of reaching Black communities disproportionately criminalized by the War on Drugs by literally knocking on doors, handing out naloxone, and making sure people know they are cared for. And we also heard from Savannah Knell about ONDCP’s partnership with the Ad Council on the Real Deal on Fentanyl campaign to spread awareness among young people about overdose risk and response. They worked with Snapchat to create an Overdose Awareness Day lens dedicated to naloxone— making it as typical to throw naloxone in your bag before you leave the house as you would your wallet or your keys. As you can see, I decided to check it out for myself! So one takeaway this Overdose Awareness Day is that until people feel comfortable sharing their drug use, we really can’t know who is using drugs and potentially at risk for overdose. So it’s on all of us to be prepared. Carry naloxone, save a life.

As part of Overdose Awareness Week, our own Savannah Knell discussed our Real Deal on Fentanyl campaign at a White House panel with our partners at the Office of National Drug Control Policy and Rahul Gupta. “We knew we needed to reach people where they are,” she said, “with real facts about what the dangers are that exist around them, and what they can do if they face an overdose.”
