  • Every day, more than 800 commissioned and non-commissioned members of DPS go to work in our Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CVE) Service within the Texas Highway Patrol. This team has grown substantially from the original 18 inspectors who worked for DPS when the department was founded in 1935. Today, our CVE Troopers perform routine law enforcement duties, while also enforcing the Motor Carrier Safety Act. From enforcing size and weight requirements for commercial vehicles to ensuring hazardous material regulations are followed, these Troopers and Inspectors help make sure that commercial vehicles meet the standards needed to travel safely on Texas roads. It’s one of the many ways DPS ensures the public’s safety. Throughout November, we’ll be highlighting DPS’ CVE team and their work to keep Texas roads safe for all.

  • 🗓️🚘 Two Months To Go: Changes Coming to Texas’ Vehicle Safety Inspection Program 🗓️🚘 Beginning January 1, 2025, most vehicle safety inspections will be eliminated in Texas. What does this mean for you? All non-commercial vehicles will no longer need a vehicle safety inspection prior to registration. A select number of counties will still require emissions tests, which drivers will need to complete prior to their vehicle registration. • As you celebrate #Halloween this evening, DPS wants to remind everyone to put safety first. 🎃 Drivers should exercise caution, as kids will be out trick-or-treating and may not be paying attention to your vehicle. 🎃 Eliminate distractions behind the wheel. 🎃 Don’t drink and drive. Make alternate plans if you consume alcohol. 🎃 For those trick-or-treating, walk on sidewalks and utilize crosswalks. Carry glow sticks, flashlights or wearable lights to increase overall visibility. 🎃 Travel with adult supervision and stay in familiar neighborhoods. 🎃 After trick-or-treating, take all goodies home for an adult to inspect before eating, and never consume any items that don’t have a wrapper. Please stay safe, and Happy Halloween, Texas!
