"We don’t need to accept that deepfakes will disrupt elections and other aspects of our lives. By working together, we can reduce their spread and defend free and fair elections in the process." Check out Christophe Van de Weyer's latest piece for Forbes Technology Council about the potential thread of AI-powered political content (like deepfakes) on worldwide elections in 2024:

    Chief Executive Officer at Telesign

This year, nearly half of the world’s population will head to the polls as more than 60 countries hold national elections. Despite this impressive display of democracy, the integrity of our votes may be challenged by AI-generated political content.   72% of voters worldwide fear AI-generated content will undermine upcoming elections in their country. In the U.S. alone, 45% of people report seeing an AI-generated political ad or message in the last year, according to Telesign 2024 Trust Index Report. This coincides with an increase in generative AI like deep fakes, which are highly-realistic images or videos that can result in a rampant spread of misinformation. When paired with fraud tactics like account takeovers, which could give fraudsters the power to post on behalf of another person on social media, the consequences could be unfathomable.   Politics aside, as we enter the era of AI, all of us need to better secure our social media accounts to prevent takeovers. Social media companies and technology firms also need to do more to enable MFA and detect fake accounts from wreaking havoc. By taking these extra precautions, together we can better prevent the spread of misinformation online.   AI-powered content could disrupt elections and other aspects of our lives, but we have the power to fight back.
