About us
Teaching Lab is a nonprofit organization that works to close the educational opportunity gap through teacher-led professional learning. We identify exceptional teacher-leaders, work with them to recruit their colleagues, and support them in improving instruction for under-served students. In order to raise the achievement of under-served students, we must help thousands of teachers improve their instruction. Despite US schools investing over $20 billion annually in teacher training, typical professional development (PD) simply does not work. Most PD is ineffective because it is characterized by low teacher buy-in, generic content, and lack of follow through. Teaching Lab offers an effective and scalable alternative for rapidly improving teaching quality. Teaching Lab uses a model based on three key elements supported by cognitive science and education research: Teacher Leadership, Core Content, and Iterative Cycles of Inquiry. These elements in combination create impact greater than the sum of their parts.

In this clip from our webinar on writing instruction, Dr. Steve Graham talks about the importance of models of strong writing to guide students. Every Writing Pathway module for the paragraph and beyond begins with a model so students know exactly what success looks like. And our AI can generate that model--in YOUR content--so you don't have to write it from scratch yourself! Check it out at writingpathway.org

Teaching Lab in the field: Our outstanding leadership was demonstrated during the first professional learning session for principals in NYC's District 9! 🌟 The session is designed to help principals analyze their school's implementation of the NYC Reads ELA curriculum using the NYC Reads ELA Implementation Tool. During the session, principals discussed the relationships between instructional indicators, HMH: Into Reading curriculum resources, and the 24-25 Instructional Shifts. We emphasized how these indicators manifest in effective teaching practices and offered advice on assessing and creating enabling conditions for the curriculum's success. Principals gained a comprehensive understanding of how to lead literacy instruction more effectively while remaining aligned with the Science of Reading.
