This means that when big things happen in the world, such as the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol in 2021 or the Uvalde shooting in 2022, my students will know about it right away, and teachers like me need to continually be aware of (or straightforwardly address) the elephant in the room. Much of what my students consume on social media can be filled with conspiracies and falsehoods.
