I was recently able to contribute to an article by Judith Lamont, Ph.D. for KMWorld in which Dr. Lamont explains how taxonomies are foundational to knowledge management. It's an excellent examination of the topic, and within it, I was able to discuss the impact of metadata and taxonomy on things like analytics and generative AI. I hope you enjoy the full article at the link below. Feel free to let me know your thoughts in the comments! - Joseph Busch

Do you KNOW about this workshop? Since 1997, the NKOS Workshop has been a forum for the presentation, discussion, and improvement of work on the application of knowledge organization systems (KOS) in information services. The next Workshop will be held at the International Conference on Dublin Core and Metadata Applications (DCMI2024) on Sunday, October 20 from 9:00AM-5:00PM EDT in Toronto, Canada. Participation can be in person or virtual. The workshop will include demonstrations of working applications and prototypes in action, pre-recorded “live” demos, and the evaluation of results from applications. The demonstrations are organized into four groups—large language models (LLMs), knowledge graphs, machine learning (ML), and AI and KOS. The fee for in-person participation is included in your DCMI 2024 registration or is $150 for just the NKOS Workshop (registration fee increases after September 19.) Virtual participation requires registration but is free. Register here > https://lnkd.in/eBm89DjT Taxonomy Strategies is a sponsor of DCMI 2024 and the NKOS Workshop. We support and practice standards-based approaches to scalable information management and sustainable information use. Maintaining a taxonomy requires a team! This team is typically made up of an Executive Sponsor, a Taxonomy Manager, Content Owners, and Content Managers. Assigning and documenting these roles is critical to keeping a taxonomy healthy and functional. You can learn more about the Roles and Responsibilities of the various team members on our page about Taxonomy Governance at the link. - Joseph Busch #taxonomy #taxonomygovernance #enterprisetaxonomy #datagovernance

As you establish your company's Taxonomy Governance Team, you'll want to create a brief Value Statement and Team Charter. This way, you'll have your goals and objectives in writing, as well as identifying the taxonomy scope and the governance team's responsibilities. For a quick example of each, you can check out the section on Value Statements at the link below. If you have these already, please feel free to share them in the comments! - Joseph Busch #taxonomy #taxonomygovernance #valuestatement

A team should be established to oversee taxonomy governance if your organization uses taxonomies. There are many value propositions for creating a taxonomy governance team: - Improve search - Be responsive to target audiences - Provide the capability to measure results - Mitigate risks - Facilitate complete and consistent content tagging - Enable content oversight, monitoring, and improvement Does your organization have a taxonomy governance team? You can read more about taxonomy governance best practices at the link. - Joseph Busch #taxonomy #taxonomygovernance #datagovernance #enterprisetaxonomy

There are 4 basic pillars upon which taxonomy governance stands. The pillars are simple and straightforward but do require focused work to build and uphold. I've listed them below. 1. Value Statement Value statements are statements about the overall goals and objectives of an application or activity. In this first pillar, there needs to be a description of what it is that is trying to be accomplished and why—what the benefits are to the organization. 2. Roles and Responsibilities The second pillar is roles and responsibilities which describe the kinds of things that need to be decided in order to obtain those goals and objectives. 3. Policies and Procedures The third pillar is the policies and procedures which are the definitions of the processes required to support the decisions that then enable and support those goals and objectives. 4. Communications Finally, the fourth pillar is communications which is concerned with clearly explaining the definitions of the processes that describe the decisions that enable the goals and objectives. If this subject interests you, I've written and spoken extensively about taxonomy governance. You can learn more at the link below. - Joseph Busch #taxonomy #taxonomygovernance

Has it been fifteen years already? Lisa Welchman produced and recorded this podcast in 2009 in which we talk about Dublin Core metadata, and of course, taxonomy. Have a listen at the link and let me know: How does it hold up in your opinion? - Joseph Busch #dublincore #metadata #dublincoremetadata #taxonomy

It might be a long shot, but are you interested in named entities or natural language processing? Named entities are more important than you think in identifying what something is about and why it is important. Want to learn a lot more about them in under 14 minutes? Have a look at this presentation I gave and see how you can supercharge your ability to find and use relevant digital assets. - Joseph Busch #namedentities #naturallanguageprocessing #digitalassets #taxonomy

Taxonomy Assessments On June 4, I gave a “Taxonomy Talk” community webinar. In this talk, I described how to do taxonomy assessments periodically and ongoing as an integral part of website instrumentation. I provided a case study about a B2B medical supply website and answered questions from the audience.
