Health Literacy Month, observed every October, raises awareness about the need for clear and accessible health information. Established in 1999 by health literacy expert Helen Osborne, this campaign encourages organizations and individuals to promote health literacy, which is essential for people to make informed health decisions. Health literacy refers to the ability to find, understand, and use health information and services to make appropriate health decisions. It involves skills such as reading, listening, analyzing, and decision-making. Low health literacy can lead to poor health outcomes, as individuals may have difficulty understanding medical instructions, navigating the healthcare system, or managing chronic conditions. Improving health literacy benefits individuals and society by improving patient engagement, reducing healthcare costs, and improving overall public health outcomes. We're beyond honored to be mentioned in this article by Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC). At Synterex, we strive to be a leader in medical communications, but we also know how important it is to get therapies to patients faster. Jeanette Towles grew up witnessing the challenges her parents faced accessing adequate medical care, which, along with her own health struggles, inspired her life's work. As founder of Synterex, she helps life science companies deliver new therapies to patients more quickly. In her pursuit of closing #HealthGaps, Jeanette overcame capital roadblocks with support from the Abbott-LISC Initiative to Support Diverse Businesses in Health, securing $1M to develop AgileWriter, an AI tool that streamlines clinical and regulatory documentation, fueling Synterex’s growth. If we are aware of cultural differences between us and citizens of another country, we may be able to ensure that their perspective is taken into consideration when helping to design a study. Mesothelioma Awareness Day, observed on September 26 each year, was established by the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (MARF) in 2004 to raise awareness about mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive cancer. This cancer affects the mesothelium, a thin tissue layer covering internal organs, and is primarily caused by asbestos exposure. Asbestos, a group of naturally occurring minerals, forms long, strong fibers that, when inhaled, can lead to mesothelioma. The disease has a latency period of 20 to 50 years, so symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, cough, and fatigue often appear decades after exposure, making early detection difficult. To support the cause, individuals can educate the public, encourage research, and support victims and their families. World Pharmacists Day, celebrated each year on September 25, was established by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) in 2009 to recognize the pivotal role pharmacists play in improving global health. This day shines a spotlight on the essential functions of pharmacists, including their expertise in medication management, patient education, and health promotion. Pharmacists ensure the safe and effective use of medications by reviewing prescriptions, advising on drug interactions, and guiding patients on proper usage. The day also advocates for advancing pharmacy practice and emphasizing the integration of pharmacists into interdisciplinary healthcare teams. Their contributions are crucial in various settings, from community pharmacies where they interact directly with patients, to hospitals where they manage complex medication regimens, to the pharmaceutical industry where they support drug development and quality control. By highlighting these diverse roles, World Pharmacists Day underscores the broad spectrum of opportunities available in the field and the significant impact pharmacists have on healthcare systems worldwide. It serves as a reminder of their commitment to enhancing patient care and promoting public health through their specialized knowledge and collaborative efforts.
