Thanks to the BC Landscape and Nursery Association for the opportunity to speak at the Grow West Conference last week – and thanks to those nursery growers, landscape professionals, and retailers who attended. Some topics we discussed during our time together: • You’re thinking about a succession plan for your business – even though the actual transition from being at the helm of your company is not happening for quite some time. • You’re keen to involve those who helped to build your business to where it is today in the process for planning for the future. • You’re thinking about how to transition your business from orbiting around you as an individual to your firm as a lasting enterprise. • You’re engaging with your customers and clients to help identify your “secret sauce” to ensure it endures. If you’re interested in learning about how SuccessionReady can help serve as a sounding board and trusted advisor to think through and address these and other succession planning matters – reach out to us at [email protected]! #GWC2024 #successionready

As the 2024 BC Economic Summit, hosted by the BC Economic Development Association, comes to end, here’s a few things we learned from economic development professionals about what they’re noticing about succession planning in their communities: • There is a real need to initiate conversations about succession planning for small businesses in small communities. • There is a need for a more proactive approach to succession planning. Currently business owners wait too long to address succession planning and this is negatively impacting continuity, and in some cases causing business closures. • There is a need for relevant and ‘right-sized’ succession planning support for small businesses in small communities. • There is an emerging challenge of talent and knowledge drain, particularly in smaller communities, which is hampering the continuity planning and succession of small businesses. • There is a need to engage youth in succeeding business owners. • There is a need for focus on fortifying the internalities (what we can control), vs. externalities (natural disasters) in communities to take a more proactive approach to succession and business continuity planning. • The epicenter of trust in small communities is with business support agencies such as: Community Futures, and Chambers of Commerce. If you’re interested in learning more about the SuccessionReady approach to succession planning for founder-led businesses, please reach out to Ashka Wirk or James Grieve CMC, CCXP, CSP, CEPA, MBA. #BCEDA24 #BCEcDevWeek #SuccessionReady
