Bremer Bank in North Dakota is a mass timber project to remember. This location features beautiful Western Archrib glue-laminated timber decking beams and columns, in a form reminiscent of the trestle bridges of the region. The main structural elements are metal panels and high-performance glazing set outboard of the enclosure. The customer plaza opens to a double-height space to the south and a balcony to the north. The branch features three “partner tables” rather than a traditional bank teller line for improved service and stronger banker-customer relationships. There are also private offices, public and private meeting spaces, open workstations, a drive-thru lane, and an outdoor terrace. Proud to be part of such a transformational project at my alma mater. This week we celebrated the opening of Siddall Hall! This building underwent a complete renovation on the heels of its sister building, Calhoun Hall, as part of a completely reimagined gateway on the south edge of UC's campus. I'm honored to have been Project Architect on this with our team at MSA Design and part of a much larger team with our engineering consultants, contractors, and our client. Heavy timber construction has been a cornerstone of Studio NYL since its founding, and we are thrilled to see mass timber methods gain more prominence each year. One of our pivotal #TwentyMoments was when Studio NYL formed the Skins Group. Studio NYL has focused on structural design and the constructability of skin and façade systems since its founding in 2004, the Skins Group was developed to build on this and respond to client demand for a higher level of offerings. To this end, the Skins Group empowers architects to push the boundaries of design through the proactive integration of structural and building science services. The collaboration of engineers and architects on the Skins Group team merges structural, architectural, and building sciences, with a focus on cutting-edge systems. Founding principal Chris O’Hara states, “Because building skins generally deliver more than aesthetics, or the visual appearance of a structure’s exterior implied by the term ‘façade,’ we chose to name our division the ‘Skins Group’. Today, modern skin- or enclosure technology is as much about performance as appearance. Building skins provide proactive controls against the environment—as in thermal comfort, moisture control, sun penetration, etc.—just as human skin serves as a filter to the external environment, monitoring temperature and controlling moisture.” #facadedesign #snylfacadedesign
