Big Macs to Used Cars. Affordability issues are impacting most consumers. Considering what a car buyer can afford upfront, or quickly reselecting different vehicle after a lender decision are two practical ways dealerships can help with this issue.

The more constrained a customer’s budget is the more important vehicle selection becomes. This is one of the reasons an early TO (turn over) to finance managers is a good idea for dealerships. It allows your highest paid employees to engage earlier in the process to build trust by sharing their knowledge in what are often very challenging and sensitive scenarios for people. As you work your way down the financial totem pole obtaining approvals and deliverable financial structures are more challenging and less predictable. Dealerships that are proactive with vehicle selection and guiding the consumer are more efficient (and more profitable) than dealers who allow consumer to guide selection based on their wants or incomplete information. Looks like #affordability has been cancelled. This presents opportunities for franchise dealerships to execute better on used vehicles. The reality is people need to shop by what they can afford….great news is you can help if you focus on it!

Affordability matters. And the better a dealership gets at guiding people based on budgets, the more success they will have in 2024 and beyond. #budget #carshopping #dealerships #finance

Imagine it’s a busy Saturday morning… a customer walks in with a challenging financial situation. Your inexperienced sales person shows them a few cars, and you end up ‘selling’ a car at 140% loan to value. The finance manager gets the deal, and sends to every lender under the sun, and no one will buy it. It’s been five hours and the customer is running out of steam. What do you do? You probably lose this deal. Or with streamline, you could’ve reselected a more appropriate vehicle 4 hours earlier and had delivered something else. Does your dealership know how it performs within different credit tiers? A slide from DealerStrong courtesy of Greg Goebel highlights what is often a glaring blindspot for dealers. Take a look at your data from route one or dealertrack, compare to sales/crm data. You might be surprised what you find. There is opportunity there, and to maximize you will need a strategic used vehicle acquisition strategy and a proactive approach to vehicle selection.
