Associate Matthew Metzger recently presented “Protecting Your Business: An Intellectual Property Masterclass for Entrepreneurs,” hosted by The Indianapolis Public Library as part of their 2024 small business series. His session focused on helping startups and entrepreneurs establish a strong foundation in intellectual property, flagging some of the coming IP pitfalls that startups face as well as strategies to leverage IP for long-term value. https://lnkd.in/e5Pkkfcy Some key takeaways from the event include: 💡 Patent Requirements: To qualify for patent protection, your invention must meet utility, novelty, and non-obviousness standards and must target patentable subject matter. But even if your invention meets these requirements, certain actions can still compromise your rights. 🔐 NDA Limitations: NDAs are essential for protecting sensitive information, but they aren't a one-size-fits-all solution. Attendees explored how NDAs complement IP strategies and how to effectively integrate them alongside patents, copyrights, and trademarks to safeguard a business. However, it’s essential to be aware of their limitations and structure them carefully to prevent unintended risks. #StartUps #IntellectualProperty #IPStrategies

Sterne Kessler secured decisive wins in two IPR proceedings before the PTAB, representing Hopewell Pharma Ventures in cases against Merck Serono. The PTAB issued final written decisions invalidating all challenged claims of two key patents, U.S. Patent No. 7,713,947 and U.S. Patent No. 8,377,903, which relate to the treatment of multiple sclerosis using the drug cladribine, marketed under the brand name MAVENCLAD®. The Sterne Kessler team included Directors Eldora Ellison, Olga Partington, Chandrika Vira, and J.C. Rozendaal, alongside attorneys Christina Dashe, Tyler Liu, Prati Khanduri, and Madeleine Bond, and patent agent Sarah Leesman.
