The ILA has begun a strike at 14 major U.S. East and Gulf Coast ports, including key hubs like New York/New Jersey, Savannah, and Houston, after failing to reach a new contract with USMX. This is the first large-scale strike in nearly 50 years. Key issues: Wage increases and concerns over automation. The strike could cost the U.S. economy $3.78 billion in just one week, with critical industries like food, pharmaceuticals, and apparel particularly vulnerable. Complicating matters, the strike coincides with peak shipping season and delays from Hurricane Helene, further straining supply chains. Prolonged disruptions could result in shortages and price hikes.
