Meet Collin McGarr, an alumnus of Bentley University who earned a business degree with a specialization in management and will be pursuing a dual MBA/J.D. at the University of Maine School of Law. He is participating in the Margaret Chase Smith Summer Internship program where he is working with the Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection as the Consumer Credit Examiner Intern. Read more about Collin below, and view even more information on our website, linked below. https://lnkd.in/eikwCq5f Next Steps: This role allows me to collaborate with various departments and professionals across State agencies and municipalities, focusing on Consumer Credit (non-bank financial institutions) Protection. It also allows me to interact with Maine financial law, regulations, rules, attorneys, investigators, credit examiners, state officials and so many more individuals to build my network, gain practical experience, and grow my legal insight. Interdisciplinary Approach: Law, Business, and Ethics: In this agency, we are the bridge between law and business. This summer I have been able to explore this bridge and how legal principles intersect with consumer credit protection. Whether it’s drafting fair lending policies, analyzing credit reporting practices, or addressing consumer complaints, we are on the front lines of protecting Mainers’ non-bank financial interests. Practical Application: Every day, I apply my knowledge of business with my passion for law in the application of real-world scenarios with business regulation, policy analysis, and educational empowerment. Here’s what I’m currently learning: Legal Research: I delve into statutes, case law, and regulatory guidelines related to consumer credit. It’s fascinating to see how the legal landscape evolves. Stakeholder Engagement: We interact with industry professionals, advocacy groups, and consumers. Their insights shape my understanding. Industry Details: The credit industry ecosystem involves recognizing the intricate relationship between businesses and consumers and its financial applications. Ethical Considerations: Balancing business interests with consumer rights is an ongoing challenge—one that I embrace. #FeaturedFriday #MaineGovernment #NewEngland #Northeast #WorkInME #Jobs #Maine #JobsInMaine #InternLife #DayInTheLife #InternshipExperience #CareerDevelopment #ProfessionalGrowth #BehindTheScenes #JobShadowing #CareerInspiration #IndustryInsights #WorkLife #OfficeLife #InternAdventures #CareerGoals #ProfessionalJourney #MGSIP24 #Law #Legal #ConsumerCreditProtection #LawStudent #LawIntern #BentleyUniversity #UMaineLaw

Abigail (or Abi for short) is just one of our many State interns this summer. She is working as an intern at the Maine Cancer Registry, specifically as a research and data assistant. She just graduated from Simmons University with a degree in Public Health and minor in Biostatistics. Read more about what she has to say about her career goals and experience so far: In the future, I aspire to work in the public health work field, whether with a government agency or in the non-profit sector. I’m most interested in epidemiology, the study of disease distribution within populations, which my current internship with the Maine Cancer Registry, an office with the Maine CDC, directly relates to. This internship has also offered invaluable experience working for state government and given me an idea of what to potentially expect in the future if this is the path I choose. One of my favorite aspects of this internship so far has been learning about others’ educational and career paths, whether traditional or not and how they made their way to serving the people of Maine. The flexibility of the position has also been a perk. The team works two days a week in the office and the rest from home. Having a chance to go into the office has been a wonderful way to meet other people also working in the Data, Research and Vital Statistics branch. It also gives me the opportunity to ask questions and problem solve with my coworkers. Some workdays I’ll have meetings or webinars to attend. I split my time between data quality and data reporting projects. This includes entering patient pathology reports into the cancer registry software and trying to locate missing patient treatment information in pre-existing profiles. What questions do you have for Abi?
