This week I’m traveling to Italy as part of my U.S. Science Envoy activities with the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs. It’s incredibly exciting to serve in this position and an honor to join the U.S. Delegation U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for the 1st G7 Working Group on Fusion Energy! Today, I joined Jean Paul Allain, Matthew Lanctot, Duncan White, Scott Hsu, and Betsy Melenbrink for the launch of this fusion working group. We also had the opportunity to tour the amazing #fusionenergy and #plasmaphysics facilities at ENEA! I’m off to more adventures tomorrow and will be joining the launch of the innaural International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) World Fusion Energy Group on Wednesday!

Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs Jennifer R. Littlejohn will travel to Cape Town, South Africa, from November 4 to 8, 2024, to participate in the United for Wildlife Global Summit and The Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony. This week in Chile, OES Acting Assistant Secretary Littlejohn and Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Environment and Natural Resources Milton met with Director General Otero and Director Cordano from the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs to build on our longstanding cooperative relationship with Chile on environmental issues. Acting Assistant Secretary Littlejohn also highlighted our environmental priorities under the new Work Program for Environmental Cooperation, including tackling the climate crisis, combating wildlife trafficking, illegal logging and associated trade, promoting waste management, ending plastic pollution, strengthening environmental laws and their enforcement, and advancing environmental justice and public participation. Additionally, Acting Assistant Secretary Littlejohn met with NGOs to discuss their environmental work in Chile. 

Yesterday, Deputy Assistant Secretary Rahima Kandahari welcomed an inspiring cohort of women in #STEM from 46 countries at the U.S. Department of State as part of the #HiddenNoMore International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). Joined by U.S. Government experts from the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science and the United States Department of Defense, DAS Kandahari and colleagues shared perspectives on the critical role of women in STEM, celebrating their achievements and addressing challenges. The #HiddenNoMore IVLP began in 2017 following the global impact of Hidden Figures, which ignited discussions on gender, racial equality, and the importance of women in STEM careers. Now in its sixth year, this program continues to elevate women in STEM worldwide, fostering a network of leaders dedicated to breaking down barriers and advancing innovation. #WomenInSTEM #WomenInScience
