We’re beyond excited to share that Starlight Children’s Foundation has been recognized in PR Daily's 2024 Nonprofit Communications Awards for our Power of Play campaign! 🎉 This award wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible collaboration of our Starlight Families, hospital partners, and corporate partners. Together, we emphasized the critical role that play has in healing, helping hospitalized kids find joy and comfort even in the toughest moments. 💫 From partnering with Nintendo to featuring powerful family stories to running impactful promotions with brands like Radio Flyer, this campaign was truly a team effort. Jules lives with a rare genetic mutation, cerebral palsy, and several other challenging diagnoses. While waiting for multiple organ transplants, he’s faced countless hospital visits and surgeries, which can often be stressful and anxiety-inducing, but during one visit, everything changed when he received his very first Disney-themed Starlight Gown. Jules’ mom, Cherica, shared that this special gown transformed a daunting hospital experience into something more bearable. "He was so excited! We could hardly believe it was ours to keep. The gown made Jules' hospital stay much more enjoyable. It came at a time when we had a tough visit ahead, filled with procedures and tests for his transplant evaluation. The gown made Jules feel special and loved!" For many pediatric patients like Jules, Disney-themed Starlight Gowns aren't just clothing—they're a source of comfort, helping kids feel special through their medical journeys. Congratulations to the K. Hovnanian Children's Hospital team at Hackensack Meridian Health Jersey Shore University Medical Center! K. Hovnanian is one of just two children's hospitals in the nation to be recognized by the Starlight Children's Foundation with the "Hospital of the Year" Starlight Award. The organization specifically honored the Child Life Team which uses the many donations Starlight provides to bring play and stress-busting activities to children at Jersey Shore. Children receiving inpatient and outpatient services at K. Hovnanian have benefited for 16 years from Starlight's Power of Play programs such as Starlight Gaming, Virtual Reality, Hospital Gowns and Toy Deliveries. We are thrilled to share that Starlight and Medline Industries, LP have teamed up to help put kids at ease when they're in the hospital with Medline's Woodland Friends exam gloves! With five different woodland creatures featured on the packaging, these exam gloves aim to bring a sense of comfort and adventure to pediatric patients. In honor of #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth, we’re proud to highlight our continued partnership with Mattel, Inc. and their generous donation of Brave Barbie dolls. 🌟 Brave Barbie, which celebrated its 10th anniversary last year, was designed for kids undergoing treatments that lead to hair loss. With her interchangeable wigs and empowering message, Brave Barbie reminds pediatric patients that they are brave, strong, and beautiful, helping them find comfort and joy during their treatment. "Georgia loves the Barbie! We talked about how the doll was brave and strong like her. She loves it!" ~ Gina, Georgia's mom Thanks to Mattel’s #PlayItForward initiative, since its inception, over 110,000 Brave Barbies have been delivered to kids across the country, including those in our Starlight Families network. Every year, 15,000 children and their families receive a childhood cancer diagnosis. In a matter of seconds, their life is turned upside down as their days ahead are filled with countless tests, chemotherapy, painful procedures, and more. At age two, after a visit to the ER and a seven-hour surgery that ended with complications, Trey was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer known as ATRT. According to his mom, Ebony, Trey has faced many obstacles during treatment, including countless infections, transfusions, and hearing loss. Still, this cancer warrior continues to have a smile on his face every day. “Trey continues to fight and find the strength through it all," Ebony told us. "He has a very outgoing personality that shines! Not even cancer can take that away from him!” Throughout his journey, Starlight Hospital Gowns encouraged Trey and Ebony’s strength and courage to keep fighting and aided in easing anxiety during his hospitalizations. According to Ebony, the Gowns have supported them both during challenging times and have helped keep a smile on Trey's face. Today, at age four, Trey is undergoing more treatment after finding out his cancer returned. At age two, Georgia was diagnosed with a Wilms tumor, a type of kidney cancer. Today, at age four, she is 21-months post treatment but still visits the hospital regularly for bloodwork and scans. For Georgia and her mom, Gina, her hospitalizations come with a lot of anxiety and worry. Knowing Starlight programs are available for Georgia has helped ease some of that anxiety for Gina, trusting that she'll find a little comfort during those tough days of testing. "The items we have received have elucidated some of the sadness," Gina told us. "[They] help her get through the days of tests."
