  • Nurse Unseen explores the little-known history and humanity of the 150,000 Filipino nurses sent to the United States to fill critical healthcare shortages. The film will be screened in select theaters nationwide throughout October. According to a 2022 Berkeley study, though they comprise only 4.5 percent of the workforce, Filipino nurses accounted for 31.5 percent of nurse deaths from COVID-19 in late 2020. And while 75.9 percent of nurses in the United States are white, only 39.4 percent died from COVID-19. Between 1965 and 1988, over 70,000 nurses were sent the United States once migration from Asia was opened. This was aided by an earlier Exchange Visitor Visa program and the westernization of the education system in the Philippines. Filipino nurses arrived to be systemically subjected to underpaid, lower positions, despite having added licensing requirements and near-identical education and training to their American-born counterparts. To this day, Filipino nurses disproportionately make up frontline workers, primarily concentrated in bedside and critical care, some of the most dangerous and strenuous nursing work. In 2012, Filipino nurses at the Delano Regional Medical Center in California won nearly $1 million to settle a discrimination lawsuit. They claimed the multilingual hospital unfairly targeted Filipino nurses only, mocking their accents and ordered them to speak English-only at all times or risk termination. The pressure on Filipino nurses only increased with the Pandemic and the ensuing rise in anti-Asian hate that spread across their streets and neighborhoods. Visit nurseunseen.com for screening dates, locations and tickets. #NationalFilipinoAmericanHistoryMonth #UnsungHeroes #StandwithAsianAmericans Sources: https://lnkd.in/enPy-DMz https://lnkd.in/gXC3_CgD. https://lnkd.in/gzYWgB4 https://lnkd.in/gnCxp6yJ

  • Please join us at the Asian American Bar Association of NY (AABANY)'s Fall Conference on October 12th at Fordham University School of Law. Led by Program Chair and Moderator Elaine Chiu, Charles Jung, Buck Gee and Stand with Asian Americans's President & GC Michelle Lee will be speaking on a panel titled "Responding Today to Workplace Injustice for AAPI Americans" This panel explores how this new consciousness has shifted its focus from the streets to our workplaces. Did Asian Americans experience COVID-related discrimination and bias from their bosses, colleagues, or clients and customers? As with the senseless violence of attacks on the streets, there is a long history and an ongoing crisis of workplace injustice against Asian Americans. According to Pew Research Center (2023), about 1 in 5 Asian adults has experienced some form of workplace discrimination because of their race or ethnicity. What have been the experiences of those who have spoken up about the harms they have suffered in their jobs and careers? Have the strategies of data collection and public awareness campaigns been successful? How have the law and lawyers helped? Anti-Asian injustice exists in many spaces and greater awareness and advocacy around all the spaces are necessary to a strong foundation and brighter future for Asian Americans. Come listen to Stand with Asian Americans' Co-Founder Dave Lu speak with Johnny Wu on the AAAIM High Emerging Leaders in Investment podcast. The gross underrepresentation of AAPI ownership in the finance and investment world should be a wake-up call for us to take action. Only 2.4% of firms, 1.8% of funds and 0.3% of assets under management in the US are AAPI-owned. Please join Dave next week at the AAAIM Elevate conference in Los Angeles where he will continue to discuss these challenges and ways to overcome them as a community. https://lnkd.in/eYSguSvm

  • Talking about our discrimination experiences at the workplace can be difficult and painful, but when we come together as a community to share our stories and inform one another, we can bring healing and empowerment. Thanks to Xi Qiao's initiative and generous support, Stand with Asian Americans led a panel discussion on "Shattering the Myth of Asian Passivity" to do just that. We learned about the myths vs. realities of the Asian American workplace experience, how courageous Asian employees are breaking the silence and holding employers and companies accountable when they discriminate against us, and how we can use the power of the law, education and community to build power for our community. Thanks for all those in attendance and special thanks our panelists Ann Lai, Charles Jung and Michelle Lee, our moderator Brian Pang, PMP, and our community partners Olivia Chen and Twrl Milk Tea. We invite everyone to join our movement to take action against systemic discrimination against Asians in America. • Stand with Asian Americans had the honor to speak at the National Employment Lawyers Association - New York Chapter (NELA/NY)). The myth of the “model minority” deludes corporations into thinking Asian Americans are doing well in the workplace. While we are overrepresented at entry and mid-levels, we face barriers in reaching senior levels. It’s an insidious racialized daily experience Asians have internalized. 36% of Asian professionals reported discrimination in the workplace, and likely, we believe this number to be much higher, as many choose not to speak up out of fear if retaliation. In the past three years pivotal studies by McKinsey, Bain, Ascend, Coqual, and more show that Asian Americans are among the least represented at the executive and senior management levels. Much gratitude to Michelle Lee, Brian Pang, PMP, Shannon Prince, Vaishnavi J. and David Mou for speaking on our panel on shattering the ‘non-litigious’ stereotype. Remember, we don’t have to face the hate alone. #standwithasianamericans #workplacejustice #workplacediscrimination
