"48 Hours" can be the difference between a life of heartache and a life of hope. Within the first two days they are on the street, they are more likely to become the target or victim of physical or substance abuse, gang violence, and disease... unless our Street Outreach volunteers find them first. For the month of April, they will work harder than ever to hit known hotspots (under bridges, bus stations, city parks) to distribute sleeping bags, clothing, food packs, and hygiene products and connect these kids with emergency housing, outreach centers and vital resources and referrals. We want them to know they have options, that there is a way out, and there are caring adults who believe in them – so they can move forward with hope. Last Saturday, April 6th, San Diego County faced record-breaking Spring cold weather, with the Bodega Springs area reaching 40 degrees. San Diego has not seen weather this low in Spring for 14 years. Unexpected cold temperatures can be hazardous, especially for the homeless community. Conditions such as these can be dangerous, especially for the homeless youth. We must provide resources and support to help with unexpected situations like this. At StandUp For Kids-San Diego, we not only recognize the danger of these conditions but also the crucial role of community support. Did you know that 40% of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ? Or that they experience homelessness at higher rates, especially those under the age of 25, with those identifying as transgender almost tripled? On the street, they face unique challenges and real dangers just because of who they are. Off the street, StandUp for Kids’ Outreach Centers around the country offer a safe, inclusive and welcoming space where volunteers are trained in LGBTQ cultural competency. We connect these kids to housing and shelter, medical and mental health referrals and vital resources – all to set them on a more positive path forward. The PATH Interscholastic Leadership Team (PILT) visited us once again bearing gifts. This time they brought sleeping bags, journals, socks, hygiene kits, and first-aid items collected through various drives, projects, and fundraisers at their schools. Minori (next to Ms. Burg) supported StandUp for Kids as her personal project, raising funds through a bake sale to purchase first aid supplies for us.
