About us

A member of Marshall Health Network, St. Mary's Medical Center is the largest medical facility in the Tri-state region. At 413 beds, it is among the largest healthcare facilities in West Virginia, with centers of excellence in cardiac care, cancer treatment, emergency/trauma services, neuroscience, and joint replacement. On November 6, 1924, the Sisters of the Pallottine Missionary Society opened St. Mary's Hospital on a foundation of faith. From the moment when St. Mary's first opened its doors, the sisters set out to fulfill their mission: "We are inspired by the love of Christ to provide quality health care in ways which respect the God-given dignity of each person and the sacredness of human life." And, so began the tradition that is St. Mary's Medical Center. It has been nearly 100 years since the doors were first opened, and during that time, thousands of lay people have joined the Sisters in fulfilling the Medical Center's mission. Along the way, St. Mary's has built on a tradition of faith, a tradition of hope, a tradition of healing and a tradition of service. Most of all, St. Mary's has built on a tradition of care.

  • “Teach me, O Lord, Thy way, so that I may walk in Thy truth, direct my heart that it may fear Thy Name.” Psalm 86:11 It is with great sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sr. Mary Diane Bushee, S.A.C. God called Sr. Diane Bushee home at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, August 23, 2024. Sr. Diane left this world surrounded by those who loved her—including not only her religious Sisters, but also family members, St. Mary’s Medical Center employees, area ministers and friends. Sr. Diane was a native West Virginian, having been born to the late Fred James Bushee and Erna Mae Marshall Bushee in Princeton, WV. She was preceded in death by her siblings: Elois Marie McAfee, Mary Marcelyn Sadler, James Raymond Bushee, Dorothy Nadine Walda and Carol Eileen Gregory. She was the beloved aunt of her nieces and nephews. Sr. Diane entered the Pallottine Missionary Sisters on July 16, 1953. She made her first profession on August 15, 1956, and her final profession on August 15, 1962, in Huntington, WV. In 1959 she received her R.N. degree at St. Mary’s School of Nursing. She continued her education receiving both her B.S.N. and M.S.N. degrees at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. She completed a three-year summer certificate program in Hospital Executive Development. From 1990 until 2015, Sr. Diane became Senior Vice President which included being Director of Mission Integration for St. Mary’s Medical Center and overseeing the Pastoral Care Department. She continued to serve on various boards including Pallottine Health Services. She was Diocesan Coordinator of Health Affairs (Wheeling – Charleston) and served on Unity Health Steering Committee. All of this speaks of what Sr. Diane Bushee did yet does not provide a clue as to the woman she was. She was a woman of faith, hope and love. She loved being a religious sister and nurse and missed the interaction with patients when she was called to go into administration. She poured that love into the community of Sisters and their institutions. She was extremely empathic and would gravitate to those who hurt, providing the kindest smile, gentlest hand, and caring heart. She will be remembered for her love of detail and meetings and her infectious laugh. As an Administrator in health care, she was vigilant in overseeing the rights of patients and ensuring that the Catholic healthcare values for patients and employees were being met. How fitting that before Sister’s death, she was able to help celebrate St. Mary’s Medical Center’s 100th Anniversary. For seventy of those years, Sr. Diane was involved in the direction that St. Mary’s would take in the coming decades. A funeral mass will be held for Sr. Diane on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, at 11 a.m. officiated by Fr. Antony Benedict. Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. Both will be held in the Sister’s Chapel at St. Mary’s.

Marshall Health Network is dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of safety in everything we do, ensuring a secure environment for everyone in our care. As part of our promise to uphold a culture of safety, security officers from Cabell Huntington Hospital, St. Mary’s Medical Center and Rivers Health recently participated in a TASER training. TASERs can be a powerful tool in de-escalating volatile situations and provide a non-lethal option for subduing potentially dangerous individuals without resorting to firearms or physical force. Our security teams tested their new skills through two written exams, static drills, live fire drills and even drills with simulation suits so they could experience as close to a real-life scenario as possible. According to AXON, the manufacturer of TASER, Marshall Health Network is the largest non-law enforcement organization in the state of West Virginia to be trained on effectively using this equipment. Our security officers will participate in annual recertification training, which is all a part of our system’s ongoing efforts to deliver a safe environment for all staff, patients and visitors.
