About us
Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools® (UCS) is a strategy for schools Pre-K through university that intentionally promotes meaningful social inclusion by bringing together students with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities to create accepting school environments. With sports as the foundation, UCS utilizes three interconnected components: Special Olympics Unified Sports®, Inclusive Youth Leadership, and Whole School Engagement. UCS programming supports students, athletes, teachers, school administrators, district officials, coaches, parents, and educators across grade-levels with resources that improve outcomes for students of all abilities. Since 2008, UCS has operated in the Special Olympics North America region of Special Olympics International. Our work has been generously supported by the Office of Special Education Programs at the U.S. Department of Education. Globally, UCS engages over 1 million students in 30,000 schools across 148 countries with plans to reach over 2 million students in 150,000 schools in the next three years.

I recently spoke at the National Down Syndrome Congress as a keynote speaker in Arizona about my journey as a self-advocate. From advocating for accessible transportation to becoming the first person with Down Syndrome to intern at the Tennessee Governor's Office, I've learned that I am as good as everyone else. Now, I work at Special Olympics and Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools®, where I help make sure resources are accessible, and teach people with Down Syndrome and other intellectual disabilities how to be professional in their workplaces. Inclusion means bringing people with intellectual disabilities together with others, to bring them joy, and to be outside in the community where they may not have been before. Thank you for the opportunity to speak at the NDSC to explain to people what ID is so they can know what to do in their own jobs. Another thank you to Natalie Campbell Newell for her hard work helping me prepare to make this happen.

This past Friday, August 9, we had the incredible opportunity to host Holly Jacobs and Ashlyn Smith at our Northwestern University Evanston campus for an inspiring presentation on “Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools® : Socially Inclusive Programming as a Pathway to Creating Inclusive Mindsets.” During the presentation, our students learned about the power of socially inclusive programming to overcome exclusion and the core components of an inclusive mindset that creates school communities characterized by meaningful connection, belonging, and inclusion. ✨ Meet Our Speakers: Holly Jacobs: Director of Research and Evaluation for Unified Champion Schools. Holly has extensive experience in the disability community, translating research into practical applications for inclusive education. Ashlyn Smith: Director for Research and Evaluation at Special Olympics. Ashlyn holds a Ph.D. in developmental psychology and focuses on the experiences of families with disabilities. Together, they shared valuable insights on the power of inclusive programming.
