It is an honor to be part of IAG, helping to support our diplomatic missions in every region with the best possible facilities.
Last week, OBO hosted its 2024 Industry Advisory Group (IAG) Annual Meeting, which proved to be a remarkable day of innovation, collaboration, and industry insights. The meeting, moderated by James Rodriguez, featured a "State of OBO" address from Director Will Moser, an update on last year's Annual Meeting recommendations from Douglas Dykhouse, the announcement of the Worldwide A/E Design IDIQ Stage 1 Shortlist from Curtis Clay, breakout sessions focused on data analytics, risk management, and tech-driven solutions, along with a workforce evolution roundtable. Led by Richard Sullivan, Victoria Hartke, Chelsea Bakken, Beth Slaughter, Mitch Miles, Alyssa Lapan, Laura Rogers, NCIDQ, IIDA, LEED AP, Lisa Kyriienko, and Andy Blackmore, each conversation was filled with impactful takeaways. We are eager to put these insights into action. Major highlights included a keynote by Evan Levelle on designing and building facades, a presentation by IAG Peer Thomas L. Mitchell, Jr., CFM, CFMJ, IFMA Fellow on the critical role of integrative facilities management, the public Q&A session, and the networking event, fostering further dialogue between OBO, IAG peers, and industry leaders. A big thank you to our IAG peers P Christian Bailey, AIA, SARA, LEED AP, Anne Marie Decker, Alysen Hiller Fiore, Jonathan Moody, Reid Nelson, Thomas L. Mitchell, Jr., CFM, CFMJ, IFMA Fellow, Thomas Phifer, Mark Robbins, Julie Snow, Robert Svedberg, FAIA, Marion Weiss, Elizabeth Whittaker, Bryant Farland, Cara L., Jeremiah Watts, Sandy Brock, PE, Patricia McCaffery, Nat Oppenheimer, Dan Sesil, Dave Riker, Christopher Budd, Jane Smith, Debra Lehman Smith, David Rubin, FASLA, FAAR, C. We look forward to the future and the impact the ideas shared at the 2024 IAG Annual Meeting will have on our mission to provide the most effective facilities for U.S. diplomacy abroad.

Great kick off to the national Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) conference in Philadelphia. Ethan Mollick from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania shared the power of AI to transform the way we work. How might we harness technology to change our approach campus planning?

Friday's SCUP: Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) NYC Symposium provided an exceptional inside look at how New York University is providing students, staff, and faculty with world-class learning environments. Recording studios, media production spaces, and presentation rooms at 370 Jay St in Brooklyn supports programs from the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, and NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. A tour of the John A. Paulson Center at 181 Mercer Street in Greenwich Village revealed more state-of-the-art facilities commensurate with the reputation of NYU's performing arts programs. It was interesting to see how a robust program of classrooms, theaters, rehearsal and practice rooms, student and faculty housing, café, and athletic and recreational facilities all work together. Designed by Davis Brody Bond, a Page Company and KieranTimberlake, Spacesmith is a proud member of the team, designing the furniture, fixtures, and equipment (FF&E) for the project. Thank you to NYU for opening its doors and sharing planning strategies with SCUP and thank you to all our SCUP volunteers and sponsors!

The The City University of New York's (CUNY) M/WBE and SDVOB procurement event highlighted efforts we all must take to promote greater diversity and equity for contract opportunities with CUNY’s 25 campuses, DASNY, and other state agencies. Basil Smikle, PhD, Director of the Public Policy Program and the Roosevelt House Institute for Public Policy at Hunter College urged us a society to “be vigilant in pushing back against inaction and apathy.” Tracey Mitchell, Special Advisor, Diversity and Compliance with the Gateway Development Commission reminded us of the importance of introducing young people to specialized areas of the A/E/C industry. Participation goals can’t be met if firms qualified to perform the work don’t exist. CUNY’s Five-Year Capital Plan for FY 2023-24 through FY 2027-28 is $5.44 billion. With a commitment to meeting the state’s 30% MWBE contracting goals, we commend the University for hosting this event to bring clarity to the procurement process. #CUNY #DASNY #womenownedbusiness #MWBE #SDVOB #businessinclusion #supplierdiversity
