Take a look at this insightful article from the AAEA - Agricultural & Applied Economics Association, co-authored by our very own #SRMEC Associate Center Directors, Lawson Connor and Hunter Biram!
🎉 Early view at AAEA - Agricultural & Applied Economics Association AEPP with Dylan Turner, Hunter Biram, Lawson Connor on " Actuarial Implications of Prevented Planting Coverage " https://lnkd.in/gT5mvhkW 🚜Within the FCIP, prevented planting (PP) plays a crucial role in managing pre-planting costs when adverse conditions prevent crops from being planted. Since PP losses are not considered production losses, it raises questions about the impact on actuarial soundness. 🌦️ 💡Utilizing a dataset of 77,697 county-level observations from the USDA Risk Management Agency, our study examines the influence of prevalent PP claims on actuarial outcomes over the past decade. 🔍 The findings indicate that while overall loss ratios remain stable, regions with a heavy reliance on PP coverage (exceeding 20% of total indemnities) experience notable increases in loss ratios. This suggests a more complex financial impact of PP than previously understood. 📊Simulating PP indemnities as production losses suggests potential improvements in loss ratios. However, this approach may lead to higher premiums, which could influence the demand for crop insurance—highlighting the need for a balanced approach. 📝 For a detailed analysis of our findings and their broader implications for the FCIP and agricultural insurance markets, please visit the full paper: https://lnkd.in/gT5mvhkW National Crop Insurance Services, USDA Risk Management Agency, Southern Risk Management Education Center, University of Arkansas Department of Agricultural Economics & Agribusiness

"The preservation of land for future generations and the creation of family legacies is an important part of the U.S. agricultural heritage. Unfortunately, many families are left vulnerable to losing their land or face complicated management decisions. This occurs because the land is passed down from one generation to the next without an appropriate transition plan or without a properly probated will."- Read more in the latest Southern Ag Today article, Land Ownership and the Preservation of Family Farm Legacies. https://lnkd.in/guFJ6-y8
