NoFLo NOMA began as a topic of conversation in 2009 during a casual lunch among a group of black female architects, two of whom had recently achieved professional licensure. At that time, there were not enough local licensed architects to meet the national requirements for starting a chapter.
By 2022, these same architects reconvened and noted significant changes: not only had the requirements for starting a chapter evolved, but the number of licensed black architects in Jacksonville had doubled. Over the next 18 months, NOMA Jax organized a series of meet-and-greet events to recruit members and build momentum toward chapter establishment.
In August 2023, the North Florida Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects was officially chartered, boasting an initial membership of 20 paid members, 10 of whom are licensed professionals. Among them, three of the original black female architects who initiated the conversation 14 years prior now hold key leadership roles: Monique Brown as President, Janel LeGard as Vice President, and Tracey Friley as Treasurer.
