About us
Snow Kreilich Architects is a nationally recognized, award winning architectural studio in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Formerly Julie Snow Architects, the studio was founded in 1995 by Julie Snow. The studio focuses on producing architecture that performs against multiple measures of design success. This focus has resulted in consistent design recognition for projects that rely on a fresh and intensive design investigation of every project. Carefully developed shared working methodologies have resulted in consistently intelligent buildings that are well conceived and carefully detailed. Since its inception, the studio has received significant and consistent design recognition, winning a variety of design awards ranging from two Chicago Athenaeum American Architecture Awards, a Design Distinction Award from I.D. Magazine, a National AIA Honor award, a Progressive Architecture Award, a Holcim Bronze Award for sustainable construction and several GSA Design Awards. Recently, the studio received AIA’s 2018 Firm Award, this award is the highest honor the AIA bestows on an architecture firm and recognizes a practice that consistently has produced distinguished architecture for at least 10 years. The studio has performed master-planning, programming and conceptual design in a collaborative studio-based design investigation. Continued evolution of design and detailing is pursued through the documentation process. Full-scale details, mock-ups, physical and computer models are used to explore projects in all dimensions. Interior design services, custom furnishings and furniture specifications are also performed in-house. Through collaboration with specialist designers and engineers, the studio has developed critical working relationships. This has allowed collaboration beyond the studio and the ability to perform projects of considerable complexity and scale.

Lakewood Cemetery's new Welcome Center is now featured in The Architect's Newspaper! The piece highlights the evolving role of cemeteries in urban life, tracing their transformation from vibrant public parks in the 19th century to underutilized spaces in recent years. Frank Edgerton Martin cites Snow Kreilich’s design as a transformational contemporary approach to remembrance. He writes: “The paradigm shift happening now at Lakewood doesn’t rely on stylistic design precedents or the creation of contemporary monuments. Instead, Snow Kreilich Architects’ design for the Welcome Center is subtle, elegant, and beautifully crafted. The building is not an iconic form but a vessel for the experience of learning, welcoming, gathering, creativity, and being alive in a place to remember those who have passed.” Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gNrBanHi Project Team: TEN X TEN, Miller Dunwiddie, MEYER BORGMAN JOHNSON, Emanuelson-Podas, Cause Sustainability, Coastwise Firegaurd, PIERCE PINI & ASSOCIATES, INC., Schuler Shook, True North Consulting Group, Kvernstoen, Rönnholm, & Associates, NTH, Inc., Gaffer Photography

We are excited to share that two of our collaborative projects have been recognized with either an Honor Award or a Commendation for Excellence by The American Institute of Architects (AIA), Minnesota. CITYPARK, developed in partnership with HOK is part of a design vision for a stadium district that aims to create an inclusive experience for the St. Louis region. Each side of the stadium is intentionally designed to be open and accessible, with no visible back doors. The interior spaces are meant for year-round activities, complemented by a large, landscaped plaza to the east that adds vital public space to the community. The Lakewood Cemetery Welcome Center, created in collaboration with Miller Dunwiddie addresses the challenges of integrating a historic lawn cemetery with its existing architecture, harmonizing tradition and innovation. This design focuses on enhancing the connection between the cemetery and the surrounding community by establishing a more inviting entrance. The awards for both of these projects will be announced during the A’24 MN closing Awards Celebration on November 13th, where the three visiting jurors will share their thoughts on their selections. Dezeen has just announced their 2024 Dezeen Awards architecture longlist, and Treetop Trail at the Minnesota Zoo is featured! The project was selected from a pool of more than 4,000 entries from 82 countries to Dezeen Awards this year, Treetop Trail is one of 227 architecture projects still in the running to win an award later this year in the Landscape and Urban Design category. From Dezeen: "Linking the developed southern half of campus with the undeveloped, forested northern half, this walkway immerses visitors into a wonderland of natural elements and animal exhibits with unparalleled vantage points. Not just an elevated walkway, the 1.25-mile-long trail incorporates four distinct access points to enhance user experience and introduce visitors to the trail. It reinforces the zoo's overall mission, prioritizes accessibility and provides opportunities for respite, wayfinding, interpretation and enhanced engagement." The recently reopened Midway Contemporary Art, which we worked on in collaboration with bplus.xyz, was recognized by Elizabeth Smith, Director of the Frankenthaler Foundation, in Observer. She notes: “The facility successfully switched to fully electric power, added new insulation that helps reduce carbon emissions, and upgraded to triple-pane windows, which together have greatly improved energy efficiency. The gallery reopened in June with a major exhibition, and plans are in place for another expansion that will incorporate additional sustainable features.” We are so grateful to Elizabeth Smith and Helen Frankenthaler Foundation for their dedication to this project, and to their continued support of sustainable arts across the country. The Treetop Trail project at Minnesota Zoo was recently featured in Fast Company, in a wide-ranging article and interview with the design team about our innovative approach to adaptively reusing a former monorail path into an accessible walkway, which has resulted in record attendance for the Zoo. Patrick Sisson writes, "The Treetop Trail adds connections to existing Minneapolis trails, opened up more views of a previously inaccessible forested area called the Back 40, and created room for additional programming, including elevated art shows and yoga classes. To fulfill these different goals, the design was purposely streamlined and unobtrusive." Full Article Here: https://lnkd.in/dj_RaTud
