About us

Snøhetta is an international integrated architecture and design firm. The practice has a global presence, with offices spanning from Oslo, Paris, and Innsbruck, to New York, San Francisco. Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Adelaide and Melbourne. Snøhetta kick-started its career in 1989 with the competition-winning entry for the new library of Alexandria, Egypt. This was later followed by the commission for the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo, and the National September 11 Memorial Museum Pavilion at the World Trade Center in New York City, among many others. Since its inception, the practice has maintained its original transdisciplinary approach, and integrates architectural, landscape, interior, product, graphic, digital design and art across its projects. The collaborative nature between Snøhetta's different disciplines is an essential driving force of the practice. Snøhetta is currently working on a wide range of international projects, including the Ordrupgaard Art Museum expansion in Denmark and the Shanghai Grand Opera House. Recently completed works include Le Monde Group Headquarters in Paris, Europe’s first underwater restaurant, Under, the redesign of the public space in Times Square, the expansion to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Lascaux IV: The International Centre for Cave Art, Powerhouse Brattørkaia and the design for Norway’s new banknotes. Snøhetta’s working method practices a simultaneous exploration of traditional handicraft and cutting-edge digital technology. At the heart of all Snøhetta’s work lies a commitment to social and environmental sustainability, shaping the built environment and design in the service of humanism. Snøhetta believes well-conceived design can help things run more efficiently, improve people’s well-being and make life more enjoyable. Every project is designed with strong, meaningful concepts in mind – concepts that can translate the ethos of its users and their context.

The Shanghai Grand Opera House is rapidly taking shape. Located in the World EXPO area along the Huangpu River, the Shanghai Grand Opera House is a significant cultural landmark within the EXPO Cultural Park, contributing to the urban renewal of the Pudong New Area in Shanghai. Connecting to the waterfront, the Opera House extends the landscape of the EXPO Cultural Park. The helical roof surface evokes an unfolding fan. Generating both surface and space, the radial movements of the roof form a spiraling staircase that connects ground and sky. The ecological and low-carbon profile emphasizes the Opera House's mission of being a public and open venue that embraces the community and urban landscape. • Known for its iconic, cross-shaped form, the 1970s building Centre Monnaie in Brussels, Belgium, has been a physically present yet functionally underutilized presence at the heart of the city center, as an office building and commercial hub. By transforming the 62,000 m² structure into a unique, mixed-use complex, the building now named Oxy will offer the citizens of Brussels a renewed and contemporary space to enjoy. As an energy-efficient retrofit, the design developed together with local partner @binstarchitects.be aspires to sustain the future of the building in the widest sense: spatially, architecturally, economically and socially. By moving away from a mono-purpose function towards a more sustainable, mixed-use space with residential, commercial and leisure functions, the 63-meter-tall building will be better equipped to serve the city’s changing needs. Read more: https://lnkd.in/dKbfJirc 📷️by: Lucian R 📸by: Binst Architects #snøhetta #binstarchitects #architecture #mixeduse #publicspace #restoration #oxy #brussels

  • Following an international design competition in 2012, Snøhetta won the commission to design the Busan Opera House. Recently, the construction of Opera House has been progressing smoothly with the façade structure being installed. Located on reclaimed land on the Busan’s waterfront, the new opera house will convert a historically industrial area into a lively public space in the city. The Busan Opera House is set to transform the opera from a passive playground for the few to an interactive and democratic space for the many. A place to meet and be together in a common cultural context. Read more: https://lnkd.in/djtzvGeX 📸by: Cundall 📷️by: Snøhetta & Tegmark #snøhetta #architecture #busanoperahouse #operahouse #culture #performingarts #busan #southkorea

  • Located in Nanterre, the Théâtre Nanterre-Amandiers has fostered strong connections between artists and audiences since its founding in the late 1960s. The current building, inaugurated in 1976, stands out for its bold programming and commitment to inclusivity, welcoming audiences once excluded and showcasing world-renowned artists and directors. The theatre is redefining itself as a hub for the community, blending seamlessly with the urban landscape through its transparent architecture, which connects the interior, city, and nearby park. This design encourages intuitive visitor flow, transforming the hall into a space for discovery, interaction, and engagement with theatre professions, artists, and performances. Set to open in October 2025, the nearly completed renovation includes advanced theatre halls and state-of-the-art equipment, ensuring the venue remains a leader in creative innovation. The architectural renovation is led by Snøhetta and supported by its partners SRA Architectes, scenographer Kanju, Khephren, Egis, Elioth, Studio DAP, Sletec, ATSL and Omega Alliance. Read more: https://lnkd.in/dgVtY4qk 📷️by: Fillipo Bolognese for Snøhetta, Sydney Zag & Snøhetta #nanterreamandiers #sraarchitectes #Kanju #Khephren #Egis #Elioth #StudioDAP #Sletec #ATSL #OmegaAlliance

  • The 23,000 square meters mixed-use development is located on a former industrial site in the Heyligenstaedt area of Gießen. Snøhetta’s proposal focuses on the diverse uses, the history and the characteristics of the public spaces in the new urban quarter. The design concepts for different courtyard situations concentrate on specific atmospheres that inspire and define the architecture, the designs and the materials of the buildings, taking into account the adjacent uses. The three- and four-story blocks are predominantly built in timber. The range of open spaces include a tranquil green oasis as well as a lively urban space with meeting points, event space, café terraces and restaurant gardens or an attractive atrium space for sports activities. The mixed-use development is currently under construction and will be completed in autumn 2025. 📷️by: Moka-studio #snøhetta #architecture #landscapearchitecture #publicspace #mixeduse #urbandevelopment

  • Since 2017, Snøhetta has been part of an ambitious project to transform an old quarry into a vibrant garden neighbourhood in Mölnlycke, just outside Gothenburg, Sweden. The vision for Wendelstrand has been to create a benchmark for environmentally friendly housing and social sustainability. What began as a bold idea to heal a scar in the landscape and regenerate the surrounding environment has now become a thriving garden city, offering diverse housing typologies to suit families of all kinds. One of Wendelstrand's key features is the Snøhetta-designed Lakehouse, a communal hub for residents and visitors alike. Now nearing completion, Lakehouse embodies the project's commitment to blending architecture with nature. Public spaces and a sprawling park wind their way through the neighborhood, culminating in the roofscape of Lakehouse – blending the building harmoniously into its surrounding landscape. We're excited to share recent glimpses from the construction site as this inspiring project progresses. Lakehouse is on track for completion in the first half of 2025. Stay tuned for more updates as we approach its opening. Read more: https://lnkd.in/djPVGzuF 📸by: Johfors 📷️by: bucharest.studio #snøhetta #architecture #landscapearchitecture #newneighbourhood #wendelstrand #regenerative #lakehouse #publicspace #community
