We’ve got the apples. You bring the honey. 🍎🍯 L'Shana Tovah. Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year and a time of both introspection and looking forward to the year ahead. To many who celebrate the High Holiday, dipping an apple slice into honey is an expression of hope that sweetness will mark their lives in the coming year. 📷: Illustration from “Natural History of New York,” 1842, Smithsonian Libraries and Archives (Smithsonian Libraries and Archives (SLA)). Crystals and fringe, sure. But what are dolls and spiders doing on this chandelier? When sculptor and installation artist Pepón Osorio was a social worker in the South Bronx, he often saw elaborate chandeliers hanging in humble apartment homes. Through his experiences in New York City, Osorio began to appreciate the diverse ways in which different cultures define and express art. Osorio’s “El Chandelier” pays homage to the artist’s roots in Puerto Rico and Afro-Latino conceptions of beauty, spirituality, and culture. Featuring baby dolls, toy bowling pins, palm trees, plastic animals, sculptures of saints, and more, the artwork includes trinkets and everyday items he observed in “Nuyorican” (New York and Puerto Rican) households in the 1980s. #SmithsonianHHM Image 1: Pepón Osorio, “El Chandelier,” 1988, functional metal and glass chandelier with plastic toys and figurines, glass crystals, and other objects, Smithsonian American Art Museum. Today is President Jimmy Carter’s 100th birthday, making him the only presidential centenarian. In 1937, a teenage Jimmy Carter joined his local chapter of Future Farmers of America (FFA). As a peanut farmer and the only member of FFA to be elected President of the United States, in 1977 Carter reflected, “I...learned the value of agriculture, farm families, stability, commitment, idealism, hope, truth, hard work, patriotism, from the FFA.” President Carter’s FFA jacket is in the collection of our National Museum of American History. 📸 : Photograph of President Jimmy Carter by Ken Regan, in the collection of the National Museum of American History.

North Carolina's dogwoods are beginning to show their fall colors, with their white blooms (actually clusters of bracts, modified leaves) emerging in spring. Since 1941, this beautiful tree has been North Carolina's state flower, with its vibrant red berries offering food to birds. As communities across the Southeast come together in the wake of Hurricane Helene, we hope the hopeful beauty of 'Jean’s Appalachian Snow' flowering dogwood, cared for by Smithsonian Gardens near the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, brings a moment of calm.

Each tropical tree is a sponge. 🌳 It absorbs and stores different amounts of carbon, which is the main greenhouse gas heating up our planet and contributing to climate change. While satellites in space help us estimate the amount of carbon stored in entire forests, the Smithsonian is working to make those projections even more accurate. Through a groundbreaking, collaborative effort called GEO-Trees, we’re working to measure individual trees—from root to leaf—using on-the-ground techniques combined with aerial scans of the forest canopy. Knowing precisely how much carbon is stored by each tree will help scientists and land managers make strategic decisions to protect our planet. https://lnkd.in/eRqK9WqF Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) | Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute #GEOTrees #OurSustainablePlanet Bezos Earth Fund Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation
