  • Thank you to our alumni guest speakers - Briana Orozco from Nutanix, Kevin Shim from Simplify, Manit Dassani from Moss Adams, and Michelle Bejarano from Cisco - for sharing insightful advice with us at our workshop, Connecting with Confidence: Making Memorable First and Lasting Impressions! This workshop was a wonderful opportunity for members to learn how to build connections, make solid first impressions, and maintain meaningful relationships with industry professionals. Here are some key takeaways from our workshop:  1. To make a strong first impression, prepare for interviews and thoroughly research the company while also asking questions and learning about the professional’s background to find common ground with them.  2. To build successful connections that lead to further career opportunities, make an effort to continue reaching out to the professional after meeting them, learn from them and their experiences, focus on being authentic, and relate personal traits to professionalism.  3. Maintain meaningful connections over time by checking in and asking for updates, reaching out to people even if you don’t need anything months in advance, setting up coffee chats from time to time, and engaging with them on social media.  4. To prepare for interviews, make sure to research the company and its employees beforehand to understand the company’s missions and goals. 5. Focus on getting to know one another and build a genuine relationship by being yourself while staying professional before asking for a reference.  6. Practice for interviews constantly and record yourself to self-evaluate to gradually build confidence and build stronger professional connections over time. We are excited to see our MA members implement these insights into their professional lives and make a memorable first impression!

  • Our first workshop of the Fall 2024 semester was a success! We would like to thank the wonderful panel of industry professionals– Jim Salas from Stellar Solutions, Christopher James Manalili from EY, and Gina Geraci from Illumio. They shared their insights on resume and interview techniques and provided valuable advice for students seeking internships and job opportunities. Here are some key takeaways from our workshop: 1. A strong elevator pitch should be concise, audience-focused, and impactful, incorporating a hook, enthusiasm, and personal connection while remaining genuine and authentic. 2. Show company knowledge and interest during and after interviews by asking insightful questions, researching recent news, and sending a follow-up thank-you email. 3. For resumes, incorporate relevant keywords, use the STAR method, keep resumes concise and focused, and ensure they pass through Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) effectively. 4. Align your resume with the company's mission and values by using language that reflects their values. 5. Use data and metrics to illustrate the impact of your experience on your resume, and be prepared to discuss the significance of your achievements in interviews. 6. Focus on transferable skills, emphasize projects and achievements, and address gaps by relating past experiences to the job requirements. We look forward to seeing how these insights will help MA members elevate their job search and career development.  Stay tuned for more workshops and resources!

We would like to extend a warm thank you to our speakers Anika P., Sachi Tolani, Dylan Chang, Kevin Shim, and Julia Liu for sharing their knowledge with us at our workshop, Unlocking Opportunities: Internship and Interview Mastery! This workshop was an incredible opportunity for our members to hear from current officers and alumni who were in their shoes not too long ago. Our speakers provided insights into navigating the internship process from the first steps of searching for the ideal position to the final steps of succeeding in the interview. Here are the main highlights from the workshop: • Utilize a variety of platforms to search and apply for internships to expand your search pool. Our speakers recommended the following: Otta.com, Simplify, LinkedIn, WayUp, RippleMatch, and Levels.fyi. • Develop a master resume and cover letter that you can utilize when applying to internships and only use the experiences that are most relevant to the position, ensuring that keywords from the job description are highlighted throughout. • Perform research on the company before going into an interview and ensure that you understand their company’s mission and values. • Don’t be afraid to reach out to those working in the company you’re interested in for coffee chats to gain valuable insights into their position or company, as it can give you a chance to ask for a referral and to establish connections for the future. • Have mock interviews with fellow peers as a way to get familiar with interview questions and try to tailor your answers to the company and position that you are applying for. • Be willing to set time aside specifically for searching and applying for internships and don’t feel discouraged if you are not hearing back from companies. Keep your momentum going! We’re excited to see how our members can take what they learned from this workshop and apply it to their professional lives!

  • A huge thank you to our amazing speakers, Mahelet Abraham from LiveRamp and David Poirier from SJSU Career Center, for sharing their expertise at our Resume and Interview Workshop! They provided our members with valuable insights and strategic guidance, fostering a deeper understanding of effective resume building and interview preparation. A special acknowledgment to our engaged members for their active involvement. We hope the knowledge gained will empower each attendee, instilling greater confidence in their professional pursuits. Here are the key takeaways from the workshop: • Ensure clear articulation of the impact of your actions and skills on projects or roles while avoiding excessive emphasis on others' actions, and instead, focus on personal development and initiative. • Craft multiple tailored resumes for various job opportunities, incorporating keywords from job descriptions to align with specific role requirements, and emphasize a "show don't tell" approach with concrete examples and quantifiable metrics. • Emphasize value by highlighting achievements, such as zero complaints or errors, and maintain legal accuracy in describing ongoing projects by using the present tense and aligning with job description details. • Behavioral interviews focus on understanding past behavior and experiences, situational interviews address hypothetical scenarios, and technical interviews evaluate specific technical skills relevant to the job. • Demonstrate enthusiasm and positive energy in the interview, leaving a lasting impression, and showcase genuine interest through effective pre-interview research on the company and interviewers. • Practice responses rather than memorizing answers for adaptability to various interview questions, and use the "Tell me about yourself" question to connect your personal story and motivations with your professional journey.
