Happy Halloween! This holiday draws origins from the 2000-year-old Celtic celebration of the living and dead but for the past century has been mostly associated with Trick or Treating. The growth of suburban communities and the end of sugar rationing following World War 2 shaped the desire for walkable neighborhoods which led to Halloween as we know it. As we continue to design residential developments, we strive to provide safe and connected districts that support Trick-or-Treating and the creation of dynamic communities. We wish everyone safe Trick-or-Treating tonight and hope that you enjoy the holiday! #Halloween #sitedesign #civilengineering

Last Thursday marked a momentous achievement in the City of York, as Phase 1 of the Northwest Triangle Redevelopment Project kicked off with a groundbreaking ceremony. The Northwest Triangle has commonly been referred to as a 7.9-acre site in the heart of the Central Business District which was formerly home to various different industries over the last 150 years. For the past three decades, the City of York and its partners have made great strives to see the Site redeveloped, including remediation of environmental contamination, and several planning efforts focused on expanding the Central Business District and providing more housing. Phase 1 of the Project, now known as Heritage Crossings, will include 139 apartment units with 20,000 S.F. of commercial and retail space with the goal of creating a live-work community. Congratulations to all members of the development team, including Statewide Partners, Members 1st Federal Credit Union, the City of York Redevelopment Authority, the City of York, and the Redevelopment Authority of the County of York, for getting this Project finally approved. Also, thank you to our partners at Bernardon, MDS Engineering, and C.S. Davidson, Inc. for your collaboration throughout the design and planning process.

Are you interested in aerial surveying? Fall is upon us, the leaves are dropping, and it’s the perfect time to consider engaging with an aerial mapping or surveying firm. Commercial drones allow us to evaluate large areas of land to deliver highly detailed imagery, data, and mapping. Compared to traditional survey methods, drone services can improve the efficiency of surveys and inspections, which reduces the amount of time and money for Clients. Whether it’s aerial topographic surveys, 3D imaging, or safety inspections, consider elevating your next Project with aerial surveying while the leaves are off the trees!

Since 2017, Pappus House has been dedicated to providing compassionate end-of-life care in a warm, family-centered environment. The name “Pappus” refers to the silky white tufts of hairs on seeds that, when detached from the plant, are carried by the breeze to “new destinations and beginnings”, representing their strong belief that life is beautiful at each stage and should be shared and honored from beginning to end. As a part of their commitment to welcome residents and visitors, they provide a “non-medical” and “home-like” setting to offer palliative care, focused on improving physical and psychological well-being. To improve upon their current facilities and further support their residents, their campus master plan is focused on creating interconnected outdoor spaces, which are defined by a primary pedestrian pathway and threshold at the main entrance. The walking path features stamped asphalt to provide texture, soften the walkway, increase campus appeal, and increase the path's traction to avoid slips. In addition, native plantings that offer color and beauty year-round were chosen to complement the pathway improvements, attracting birds, butterflies, and bees to create a tranquil environment for its residents. Once completed, the facility will use the grounds as a calming, soothing, and reflective landscape that will provide emotional, social, and spiritual support for their patients and their families. We look forward to sharing more updates this Fall as more plantings are installed and the campus continues to transform.

As part of Pennsylvania's recently signed bipartisan budget, PA DEP is initiating the Streamlining Permits for Economic Expansion and Economic Development (“SPEED”) program and the Chapter 105 Permit Pilot Program to reduce backlogs, speed up the permit review process, and have the state government "move at the speed of business". This pilot program is due to launch this Fall and should reduce DEP permitting time significantly. SDC applauds this bipartisan effort to streamline the permitting process and will continue to follow this program as it is implemented. Stay tuned for more updates!
