Where do you turn for information about your local community? Chances are, your first move is to search the web for things like "movies near me," "East Side Farmers’ Market hours," or "historic district building codes." But where do you go for trusted local knowledge? For questions like "Why is the mall closed on Mondays?", "What’s a fair tip at the diner?", or "Why isn’t the speed limit enforced on Main Street?", finding reliable answers can be more complex. At Siegel, we’ve been focused Civic Knowledge Institutions that provide not just information but the context local communities, businesses, and governments need to thrive. Check out our latest insight from Senior Vice President & Head of Research, John Irons, as he explores the role of Civic Knowledge Institutions in the digital age and how Siegel is investing in them as a critical component of society's digital, social, and physical infrastructure. 🔗 Find it on our website. https://lnkd.in/eirUpSae

📣📚Update! As some of you know, I've been digging into the role policy schools play in the gap between policy and implementation. I'm excited to share that my exploration has culminated in a published article in an academic journal: IEEE. I dig into how (and why) policy schools (perhaps unknowingly) exacerbate the gap between policy and implementation, and offer some practical suggestions that could work within existing programs. If this (somewhat esoteric…) topic resonates with you or someone you know, let’s connect! A HUGE shout out to the Siegel Family Endowment for supporting and enabling this work. And to the countless colleagues who have shaped my thinking along the way, especially Cori Zarek, Donald Moynihan, Lynn Overmann, Jennifer Pahlka, Greg Jordan-Detamore, Charles Johnson, Andreen Soley, and danah boyd — THANK YOU. #PublicPolicy #Education #Research #PolicyImplementation #AcademicJournal https://lnkd.in/e4Q82-M2

How can technology contribute to human flourishing, helping people fulfill our greatest hopes for humanity that are codified in fundamental rights? In this post, Sarah Gilbert and I write about freedom of association and affiliation and why they are so important to social technologies. So many debates about tech policy hinge on freedom of expression for reasons related to strategy and precedent. Yet most tech platforms and products are about relationships — not just speech. We believe that conversations about these rights can help inspire researchers, designers, and litigators to find new ways to talk with each other and create consequential work. While CAT Lab's work has fundamentally been about association and affiliation since the beginning, we haven't talked our work in that way so much in the past. So we're grateful to the many conversation partners, including the Siegel Family Endowment, Templeton World Charity Foundation, and Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University for the discussions motivated us to do more reading in this area, hold workshops, and seek feedback from legal scholars to work on this idea. https://lnkd.in/e8Bv-CEJ

Our new report, "The Dawn of the AI Era: Teens, Parents, and the Adoption of Generative AI at Home and School" -- out today -- shows that teens are quickly adopting generative AI, similar to how they embraced social media. But many parents are behind on how often their kids are using this tech, and schools are still struggling to keep up. Key Findings: - 70% of teens use generative AI tools like chatbots and image generators. - 53% use AI for homework help. - 41% use AI tools with their teacher's permission; 46% use them without. - Only 37% of parents know their teen uses AI, and about half aren't talking about it. - 40% of teens say their schools have no AI rules or guidance; 83% of parents say schools haven't communicated about AI. - 87% of teens who discussed AI in class are more aware of its potential for misuse. - 49% of teens verify AI information with other sources. - Black students are over twice as likely as White or Latino students to have their work wrongly flagged for AI use. Let's encourage open dialogue among schools, teachers, parents, and young people, and help schools create clear policies for responsible AI use. Last week, we hosted the inaugural Tech Together convening at Cornell Tech, welcoming over 200 philanthropic leaders, impact investors, and mission-aligned capital to unite under one goal: ▶ Building a global financing and investment ecosystem for Public Interest Technology ◀ Although recognized across sectors—health, education, climate, and inequality—Public Interest Technology often manifests under various names and actions. Tech Together aimed to take a step toward building a global coalition of funders, addressing current challenges and fostering a broader range of technology solutions, business models, and public policies tailored to diverse cultural, social, and economic contexts. What we witnessed last week was a remarkable demonstration of our shared goals, opportunities for meaningful collaboration, and inspiration on how we can effectively reshape technology to drive impact in these critical areas. We can’t thank our collaborators enough for making the day possible. A reflection, speaker videos, and photos to come soon, but what we want to know from you now is: 🔵 What do we all need to do next to continue advancing the PIT movement? 🔵 Comment below ⤵ https://lnkd.in/ghmnuhDF

Featured on Tech Policy Press today: Siegel Fellow Owen Davis's latest op-ed on collecting better data to assess AI's scope, scale, and impact on the workforce. While economists have developed extensive theories on AI's impact on employment, less attention has been given to its role in management and HR. The predominant focus on the nature of work itself has created a gap in understanding how AI is reshaping the management of workers and workplace dynamics. Ultimately, AI may not only change what work we do but also how it's done. Read Owen's piece to understand why this distinction in data collection matters and how it could highlight enduring shifts in workplace power dynamics, with workers potentially ending up on the losing side. https://lnkd.in/egqa9uDR

🌐 In 2022, we partnered with New Growth Innovation Network to explore how digital and social infrastructure can empower BIPOC communities to create wealth. The report underscored a critical truth: sustained economic advancement depends not just on reliable broadband or the mere existence of a tech ecosystem (though those are necessary conditions); rather, tech-based economic development requires a focus on digital equity and long-term participation build on empowering people and places. 👉 As we dig into the barriers faced by BIPOC and women in tech, it becomes clear that digital equity must be a central focus in our economic advancement discussions. This report articulate the ingredients for inclusive tech-based economic development (I-TBED), emphasizing processes and outcomes that support diverse participation in the economy. It aims to break down barriers in tech by supporting diverse founders and promoting inclusive wealth-building. 📣 📣 These strategies are not just concepts—they are actionable pathways to transform our communities and close the wealth gap! 📣 📣 🔍 Recommended reading for: community and economic development professionals, and members of the broader tech ecosystem, such as universities, accelerators, founders, and investors. #ITBED #EconomicDevelopment #Equity
The tech industry is facing significant disparities: only 26% of tech workers are women, and a mere 2.2% are Black women, and 1.9% are Latina women. This stark reality underscores the urgent need for Inclusive Tech-Based Economic Development (TBED) to foster a more equitable tech ecosystem. In our latest report, "Tech Equity In Action," NGIN has collaborated with tech ecosystems nationwide to outline five transformative strategies that aim to turn tech equity from aspiration into reality. Authored by NGIN Advisor Mari Kate Mycek, PhD, and funded by the Siegel Family Endowment, this report delves into best practices for inclusive #TBED, focusing on processes and outcomes that enhance diverse participation in the tech economy. Catch our grantee, The Bell, featured in The New York Times today! We’re incredibly impressed by their efforts to support the next generation of journalists by expanding access to programs across the city. Their work tackles disparities in access to the journalism profession and is making a lasting impact on the broader information ecosystem. Congratulations! 🎉
It's a momentous day for student journalism in New York City. Two years in the making, the NYC Youth Journalism Coalition is excited to announce the opening of applications for Journalism for All, a $3 million public-private initiative that will equip an initial cohort of 30 public high schools to create new, sustainable journalism programs. The Bell worked with partners across the city to lead this charge because we could not meet the crush of demand from students for our out-of-school programs. It's no fun turning away so many motivated students knowing that most of them attend schools without any journalism classes or extracurriculars. Working alongside Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, Press Pass NYC, City Limits, The Paley Center for Media, Charles H. Revson Foundation, Helen Gurley Brown Foundation and many other incredible partners, we are changing this reality and creating equitable access to youth journalism citywide. Thank you Claire Fahy and The New York Times for spotlighting Journalism for All and the student leaders who have tirelessly advocated for it.
